[Request for Feedback] Model Open and SWC Progress Experience

    All,
We wanted to solicit feedback on the new experience we're rolling out for Model Open and SWC operations on cloud workshared models in C4R. While the majority of these operations complete in under a minute, our data indicates that the operation can sometimes take longer.

We set out to build a better experience when that happens, which you'll see today when you do a SWC on Revit 2017.1. This thread is to provide feedback on that experience, as well as a similar effort for Model Open in the works at The Factory. You can find the design document behind the Model Open work here, and take a look at this video illustrating it:

Having reviewed the information about this new experience, and thinking about your usage of Revit, we'd love know the following:

    • What situations do you find this progress experience useful?
    • Do you understand the steps being carried out during the processes? Are there any steps whose name confuses you?
    • Is there other critical information you expect during the operation?
    • Any other feedback on this new experience?

We look forward to hearing from you.

    Cheers,
    Kyle & the C4R Team

Yes this is helpful. But it would be more helpful to add in prior to opening a model or SWC that revit shows you what other team members are doing. IE when I click SWC and someone else is allready saving, that revit tells me to keep working and once that person is done saving I will be notified for my save to take place. We find(especially with revit server and I assume the same with C4R) that when multiple people try to save or open that is when the time to save really goes up.

Good feedback, which leads me to a follow-up question. Right now the Revit Communicator timeline view provides a log of SWC history, and even indicates when people are carrying out a SWC operation. It's where we want to solve this problem, although your feedback indicates that it is not. What scenarios is this not working for you?

Kyle, one suggestion is to have a built in timer in Communicator. When we had large projects (15+ users), we tried to schedule people to SWC. Why not have Communicator remind people, especially when there is no activity?

Great idea Markus. This one's in the backlog now.

i like the various feedback from the Open Model dialog boxes and find this helpful to us. Especially on our larger projects with multiple users opening from all over the internet where not all connections are the same, and not consistent. Also it would great to see "% complete" displays in addition to the green progress bars. question: what type of information will be displayed in the 'Show details' drop-down?

    as far as New Experiences;
    - i'd like to reinforce the idea of 'SWC Queuing' - this would greatly help our users by not having to waste time waiting for the right time to sync. Currently it's a manual process where the users watch the activity feed in the Communicator and wait for the 'right' time to sync. Ideally, the user would 'send' the SWC operation to some sort of auto-queue, thereby allowing the user to not have to stop working, and letting the auto-queue process do the work of syncing.

    - the ability to disconnect links, or force revit to not open links, during the Open Model process is a must have.

I like the new feedback Kyle and our users find it useful. My only wish is that we could pull the information you are displaying in the communicator directly into Revit. I would also like to echo the SWC queuing for both C4R and Revit Server. I still run a very robust Revit Server network because it works well for us.

I second this request because our non-C4R users find the opening of the Communicator distracting. I end up disabling Communicator manually to soothe their irritation.

@markus That shouldn't be happening, at least with any recent update of Revit & C4R. Communicator should not start with Revit. It should only start when a Revit user opens a cloud workshared model or when they actually hit the Communicator button in the Collaboration tab on the Revit ribbon.

If you're not seeing that behavior, can you let us know what version and update of Revit your teams are updating?

In addition, if you all have issues with the above designed behavior, please let us know if you think there are better approaches we could make.

I had no idea! It has that behavior with Revit 2016. I will submit an Autodesk support request per your advice.
    Thanks! Markus.
