    equality coolness

Maybe this is well known, but I just stumbled across this:

Let's say you have a few walls which need to be dimensioned on equal distances Face to Face. This would be the workflow for me:

    1. Dimension Core to Core and put equality constraint
    2. Delete the dimension but keep the constraint. (a major reason to work with Work- and Plotviews btw)
    3. Redimension on Wall Face.

This kind of gets complicated when walls have different thicknesses. Then you need to due the math manually and lock the dimensions.
Today I stumbled across an alternative which is going to save me a LOT of time!

    1. Dimension Core to Core and put in EC.
    2. Select the dimension line and choose Edit Witness Line
    3. Set the Witness Lines to the Wall Faces
    4. To my great surprise, the EQ returned! You now have an equality constraint on the distance between the wall faces. And a surprisingly redundant one. I stretched, changed Wall thickness and all. But I wasn't able to break the constraint.

I put some printscreens with this post. Hope it helps you as it will me.

Martijn... try deleting your dimension and see if you get a box that asks you to keep constraints or not... something like this.

I can replicate this with 3 walls, but trying the same workflow with 4 breaks the constraint.

Yeah, it does. But that wasn't the point. The point was that you can put an equality constrain on the interior measurement of a set off walls, instead of only constrain wall centerlines (which, with walls from different width does NOT give the right constraint for internal measurement).

    ikinks:
No it doesn't. But it does need a slightly different approach:
In order for this to work on more then 3 walls. You need to manually replace the witness line from center to a wall face (using the grips) and then use edit witness lines to dimension the second wall face. It will work then.

Looks interresting, but I can't get it to work.
Ofcourse I want this to work with any number of walls.
(3 or 4 seperation walls between 2 concrete walls for example)

    This is what I do:
    - create 4 walls between 2 walls
    - dimension all walls core-to-core
    - set to EQ
    - If I edit the witness lines of the 4 inner walls I create the dimension of the wall-thickness
    - I move the outer lines using grips to the innerface of the 2 outside walls
    - the dimension from both outside walls to the closest seperation wall are both equal
    - the dimension between the 4 inner walls are equal but different...
    - If I now click on EQ, the left 5 walls are equal, but the right one is not...

I'm probably missing something here, but what?
Now that I know this is possible I want to use it!!

Can't see the inline attachment but I can reproduce this... Have to look into it more. I'll do so, right after I finished my Curtain Wall excersize. I believe it has something to do with the placement of the "equality anchor" but not quite sure. I'll get back to you on this.

As a followup here, I am wondering if anyone has a shortcut to center a group of elements (light fixtures, in this case) in a room, where the unit spacing is different in the middle than on the outsides? So, for example, there are two fixtures, 6 feet apart, and the distance to the walls is EQ but unknown (as in, anything not 6' (and thus not EQ across the entire dim string).

I think this would be easy if I knew how to create a discontinuous but related set of dimensions. I'm not sure that would even exists...

    Suggestions would be really appreciated.

Ed: My apologies, it turns out this IS as easy as it is... Presumably I have a setting checked somewhere b/c the two of us sitting here are doing the exact same process and yet hers works and mine doesn't.
