As far as I know the materials API is still pretty locked down, even going through Dynamo and what you are asking might not even be available.

@cpercer Thank you for your valuable feedback. I think what your asking for is a great idea. You can already do this by manually clicking on the bottom line in the batch rules, and type in directly what material assignments you desire. If the material is not detected in the current project then it will be grayed out. If the rule already exists, or you are assinging the same old material to two new materials, one of the rules will be highlighted in blue letting you know that the rule is redundant. (This behavior can also be prompted if the old material and the new material is the exact material, a rule that can only be registered by manually typing it in). When using the add rule button, these redundancies are automatically addressed. Let me know if this makes sense. A mini tutorial could also help showcasing the feature mentioned above.

Regarding the deletion of materials, a feature for deleting materials after replacing or simply deleting a material can be easily implemented. This feature was omitted because there are some areas that the api does not allow access to the material attributes, and for those unique scenarios it's a safer approach to leave the feature out.

The current strategy for removing unused materials would be via the built in Revit purge.

However, we can look further into how this could be implemented.

Polynine - are you able to access material assets in addition to the top level material to perform similar actions?

@cellophane For the initial scope of the app, material assets were not a point of focus, as the material element itself is the changing variable.

From our preliminary research, re-assigning existing material assets is straightforward.

Creating material assets from scratch is very limited.

If it isn't a huge ordeal programmatically I'd love to be able to analyze & cleanup material assets at the same time but it isn't the end of the world if you can't do it easily. While my materials are at least kind of in-shape I haven't made to assets yet and I know it is i mess.

@cellophane I'm sure that other users are finding themselves in a similar situation regarding material assets.

We will explore the feasibility of implementing the feature and possibly release an update.
