    Tree Column

Hi I have about 20 tree columns that I need to model for a project I am working on. So far I have had them modeled as groups with columns for the trunk and beams for the branches. I now have to add connection plate details and thinking that there must be a better way as it is hard enough trying to manage the multitude of group types now. You can see the column in the attached picture.

I want to create a tree column family that can flex a bit. Height of the 'trunk' is a must but it would also be nice to be able to have the branches adjust to a change in roof pitch or rafter spacing if it isn't a huge amount of extra work.

My question is what is the best way to go about achieving this? I have played around with the structural column family but it seems like it is quite complicated just getting the geometry of the branches correct let alone getting them to flex at all. I'm thinking an adaptive family might be what I'm after but not having any experience with them I'm not certain this is the correct path either.

Any thoughts on what the best method would be?

Thinking out of the box. For branches, Try using pipes and customized fittings(cap/plug) as plates/connectors.

    Hi,
About adaptive components with columns, I have this good tutorial in my bookmarks:

depends on what parameters need to change the height of the base support lengths of the arms would be easy changing the angle of the supports would require formulas.

I would use pipe columns to create this in a family template

There is a start to the family about 200 LOD version

    Thanks for all the replies.

After some overly complicated experiments I have settled with a regular column family with nested families for the 'trunk' and 'branch' sections.

It doesn't exactly flex properly but the height to the branch intersection works well enough for my purposes. For now I will just cross my fingers the rafter spacing and roof pitch stay the same.

One problem I am having though is that the stick symbolic lines for the nested members aren't showing when the tree column is imported into the project. Is there some way to get them to show up or should I just draw in some more aligned to the members?
