Beam Familt - Profile contains no loops

    Hi All,

I have created a revit family profile for roof purlins "Top Span Profile (no radii).rfa". I intended to modify the sweep profile of an existing beam family to create a new beam family. When trying to create a family, revit complains of "no closed loops". The profile looks ok to me (no sure how to check for closed loops) but I have read that this might be an issue due to short line segments since my material is as thin as 0.6mm? Does anyone else have experience with this?

Also, What is the trick to adding fillets to revit families. I created 2 new parameters ri & ro for the inside and outside radii and dimensioned each radius in my sketch which then over constrains the sketch and throws an error for each new dimensions I have placed. I left the profile without radii because it seems to flex properly.

    Appreciate your help,

    Regards Jake

Before being able to apply this profile to a beam or sweep, you need to resolve the family first. Going from one type to another causes an error of "constraints not satisfied". There seems to be some redundant equal-equal constraints. Try to simplify the geometry and the number of constraints before going any further.

    Hi Alfredo,

Thanks for the reply. I know there are unresolved issues with the family "with radii" (I will try simplifying as you suggest), however the "no radii" family appears to flex OK but has a "no closed loop" issue. If I forget about the "with radii" family for now, is there anything that you can see in the "no radii" family that is resulting in the observed error?

    Regards Jake

I looked at the "no radii" family. I can't even load that family into another family. I get the same errors of "can't make type", '...contains no loops", etc. It is not because of the thickness of 1 mm, because that is more than 1/32" of an inch, which Revit can do. It's not because the family is not a closed shape (loops). I copied and pasted the lines into a model family, and I was able to make an extrusion with that shape. Therefore, I think it is because of some redundant equal-equal constraints that you have. I tried erasing all the dimensions and loading the profile again, and this time it loaded without errors, and I was able to make a sweep with it.

OK thanks for the feedback Alfredo.

I will try revisit the family to see where I went wrong. I thought if I could flex the dimensions correctly after adding each new type then the family would be valid, however there appears to be a bit more to it than that.

Again appreciate your comments - I wouldn't know where to start without them.

    Regards Jake
