    Annotation label in Family

    Hi all,

I have created a span direction symbol in a generic model family. I chose the generic model as it was the only method I could find to give me grips to stretch the symbol as needed on my sheet.

I would like to add a text label field for custom text to the family however it appears that my only option for that is in generic annotation families. Is there a way for me to combine the need for grips and text into the model family? Thanks.

You will need to nest in a generic annotation family and map the text parameter from it to one in the generic model family.

    Thanks Brian,

Can you give me some info on nesting?

Looks like I found some info. Thanks again. I'll give it a shot!

Ok, fix one issue then run into another one. Isn't that how this goes?

I've attached my two families. Can anyone determine why the text doesn't align to the center of the symbol when it's stretched?

You need to constrain the nested generic annotation family. Use the Align tool, select the reference plane, the select the embedded reference plane of the nest, hit the padlock icon.

Thank you so much for the help Brian! That worked. This is my first go at family creation so i'm slowly learning.

Edit: Well I thought it worked. I'll keep trying. Thanks

As you go you will find out families are all about Reference Planes / Lines and Constraining. If you nest it is all about mapping parameters and constraining. Even for the most complex families that is what happens.

Thanks. I locked it to the center plane and it still shift to the right when stretched. I'm lost now.

Sorry I missed it, you need to do a dimension string for the three vertical reference panes, then hit the EQ value. The center reference plane isn't "Constrained" to be in the center.

Ok. I grouped the text with the reference plane in the child, then aligned and constrained in the parent added eq. dimension and it worked. Thanks again.
