Unhappy Struggling with my first wall based light family

As I may have mentioned in my earlier posts I am using trialling Revit and have no access to any experienced users other than you ladies and gents.

Our 3 day fundamentals training course didn't cover anything about creating families so I have started with a simple wall mounted bulkhead light. Initially I cheated and mounted it 170mm off of the wall centreline but on my next few jobs the walls are likely to change so I thought I'd go back and do a proper job.

I started out by constraining the revolve sketches to reference planes it kept going wrong when I changed the wall thickness, (attached hurricane ext wall light 0014.rfa.) I then made it even more simple by having one extrusion and one continuous void form revolve with a couple of constraints Hurricane ext wall light.rfa this still didn't work.

Does anyone have any hints on how I mucked up or links to a relevant and good training video?

Oh BTW I'm on Revit 2015.

Always try to reference just one reference plane for all features. So for a wall based family the logical plane would the wall face. Your's is constrained to the lightbox plane, so when the wall changes it breaks.

Instead of a void revolve I would use two solid revolves. One for the housing and one for the light itself. That way you can apply different materials.

Didn't look at the family but you refer to it as wall based. Unless the family needs to use the thickness of the host (wall/ceiling/floor/roof) for some reason I, and I think most here, would recommend making it a Face Based family.

I did originally do the two revolves for materials but when that went horribly wrong I over simplified! Will try with only one ref plane and try to select the correct one!
