Can you pick up type parameters from a family host in a project?

I seem to remember seeing something along these lines before, not sure if it's possible or not...

Looking to create a family, simple fin plate to pick up parameters from the OOTB beam or column family (not necessarily both in same family, 2 separate families).

So relate the height of a fin plate to the host beams distance between fillets for example.

Is this possible? If so can it be simply explained here or am I better just muddling along with a bit of direction?

    Thanks in advance.

Making your fin plate a shared nested component inside the beam family might be easiest. If you have a separate family dependent (such as aligned/locked?) on the geometry of another in the project it might get ugly. Otherwise you're back to manually inputting dimensions or swapping types to keep things correct.
I have no idea what a fin plate is but there is the Revit extensions addin (free on subscription) that auto generates structural reinforcement and connections, and there are other 3rd party addins out there too.

I've explored the 2013 extensions today, very briefly in between 'billable work', and they seem tidy. I will have a more careful look when I get the time and explore the 2015 version also.

    Thank you Elton.

However, could someone just confirm or deny if the pulling instance or type parameters from a host thing is possible as I can see several different uses for that if I can figure it out.

I use a custom shared instance parameter in nested families called 'host', which is linked through to the description parameter of the host family. In the project if tab-select (or schedule) the nested family I can see the host's description written to the 'host' parameter in my selection. AFAIK there is no way to achieve this from 2 separate families that are not nested in one way or another. There are also addins (cant remember right now) that will copy text data from 1 parameter to another, even though it;s faster than one at a time it is still a manual process that requires coordination/ manual updating.

    Thanks again Elton.
