Adding Cut Length to Structural Framing Tag

Does anybody know how to edit the structural framing tag family so that the cut length is displayed in the tag?

Or at least, is there a way to add a callout of some sort to a beam that will show it's cut length?

    Yes

Edit your framing family. Created a shared parameter called "What ever you want" with the "length" type of parameter. Add a dimension to the same reference planes that are being controlled by the "Length" parameter in the family. Select the dimension you places and in the options bar right under the ribbon do the pull down for Label. <Add a Parameter...> Locate your shared parameter you created. It will automatically make this a reporting parameter. Load the framing family into your project.

Next you will need to edit the structural framing tag family and add a label to the family that reads this reporting parameter that you setup in the framing family. Do this by editing the structural tag family. Place a new label. Add a parameter. Select your shared parameter. Then add it to the label. Load into your project.

One thing to note is the reporting parameter only like to read the length the first time you place the tag. Updates to the reporting length doesn't happen. Maybe somebody with far more experience with reporting parameter can weight in on a solution to this. Maybe you need to add the shared parameter to the project...

Anyways I hope this was a clear walk thru for getting your beam length to report into a tag.

    Yes, thanks you!

That works for displaying the length. The cut length on my parts is different and that's what I'm trying to display. I tried adding annotation to the actual part in the family instead of the reference line and that didn't work.

I also have something weird happening with these labels. sometimes it displays the correct information and other times it doesn't.

I don't want to have to double check every single label every single time I make a change... I have not been using revit for a long time but I really don't get some things. There is clearly a structural parameter called cut length that is already there. Why can't that be displayed in a tag? Why does revit care what I want to display in a tag so much. I can add 100 different useless parameters to the tag that nobody would ever want to show but for some reason cut length isn't available?

I mean, look at some of the stuff I can easily add to a label that is pulled right from the same place as the where the cut length is.

If you are looking for Cut Length add the reporting parameter dim string to the reference planes that are controlling the geometry in the beam family.

The tag seems to only update and display the correct dimension on first placement.

I know I know I know... we just gotta roll with the punches sometimes. You can schedule the cut length and length.... if that helps at all.
