    creating semi-open walls and doors

Hi, I want to make a brick wall that is semi-open, see attached photo.
I've tried to dot this with 'edit profile' but copy-pasting this wall takes forever and with ever wall (4m wide / 3meters high) my file grows with megabytes at a time.
I've got the tip to use a wall-reveal, but that's continuous right?

And the same question for a garage-door (and meshed fences etc.) that is more open than closed. (see second attached file)
I might have to try this as a curtain-wall panel? Is that the way to go?

Ofcourse it's just for the 3D, in elevation-view I can create a pattern to represent this.

    Thanks!

If you look for the recent thread on how to do a metal grate facade you'll find most will advocate a surface hatch pattern and a material with a bump for renders - there's already a brick one in the default materials library like that (IIIRC) - so all you need do is model a different wall type for the seperated bond area and either embed it within the main wall, or compose it within a stacked wall.

Othewise, if you're 100% set on it modelled, look for the bitmap plugin (discussed at length on Buildz) to the bricks as curtain panels.

Thanks, we'll render it in 3D-VIZ anyway, so a surface hatch-pattern will do just fine!

For the bricks to render just remotely correct in 3D max, I'd forget about the system tools (walls, curtain walls, etc.), and instead create 2 families...

1 for below the windows, and 1 to go between the windows... Copy/Mirror those two as needed, and you'll still have a great performance.

And yes, in the family editor, I'd model every single brick, and even the joints

PS. The garage door should render fine with a standard mesh material... No need to model that.

We have done exactly what that photo shows (ie" Brick screen) by creating a wallbased family which is just a brick sized void and then copying around

Thanks Alex. I actually did that last Friday! I've created a window family with 2 columns of voids that stretch from level to level.
I've arrayed those voids and made them parametrical. If I load that family in my project and place it in a wall I can enter the number of columns.
So with one family I can create an open-brick-wall of 1 meter wide of 10 meters wide.

It takes a lot of time to load, but after that, the performance of the project doesn't decrease..
