    Curtain Wall Mullion Parameters

    Hi All,
I am trying to create smart, parameter-rich curtain walls (for use in scheduling), and have run into a few major problems.

First, it seems there is no way to add custom parameters to the curtain wall mullions (I want to add for example the type of metal, number of screws required, type of rubber required, etc.). Also, there appears to be no way to add parameters to the Curtain Wall family (a system family, maybe this is the problem).

I have been able to add parameters to the panels, and also to the mullion-profile family, but the parameters from the mullion-profile family are not transferred to the actual mullion types.

So, basically, the only custom parameters (aside from length) that I can add to any part of curtain walls are in the panel.

I wanted to hear some of your experiences dealing with this issue, and if there are maybe 3rd party add-ins that can give more control over the curtain walls.

Also, maybe a creative use of schedules that can help to add more data to the curtain wall

Please let me know what you have to say, and help me out here!!

    Thanks in advance!

You can add those desired parameters for type of metal, qty of screws etc as Project Parameters directly within the project. You'll just need to select Curtain Wall Mullions as the parameter category. In similar fashion, select the Wall category for the CW family types. Scheduling this data is just as simple.

Thanks a lot! This is a step in the right direction.

Do you know of a way to assign functions to these parameters? I want for example the number of screws to be a multiple of the mullion length, or some parameter that represents the length of the curtain wall * x.

    Thanks again!

You're going to need to set up some calculated parameters in your schedule. Here's a few screen caps of a quick schedule showing how this could be accomplished. You'll have to give a bit more thought on what data you are trying to mine, and how you'll extract it.

The schedule i set up was for walls, not curtain wall mullions. Scheduling the latter might be trickier -- but not impossible -- since you won't most likely will not have one mullion across the length of the wall, but rather multiple segments due to how the grids are divided.

At some point Curtain Wall Dave will chime in, as i'm sure he's done something like this many times over. I'll defer to him. It's in his wheelhouse.

    Hope this helps.

I’m at the beach on vacation but while what Noam wants to do is possible I found so many pitfalls in the process, like all of the many variables (one mullion uses screw type A but the next mullion uses screw the B) that I finally gave it up. But I have a document that was originally created by Alf Medina that I updated as I progressed through the process of curtain wall takeoff that shows how to takeoff vertical mullions vs horizontal mullions, optimize cut lengths to stock lengths, and count the various accessory parts and pieces, etc. I feel that I would need to get Alf’s permission to post this document and I’ll ask him when I get back next week. The doc is 100 pages plus.

    Curtain wall Dave....I like that

    Thanks Kingjosiah,
I see that I can't assign function inside the family itself, I have to use the schedule. I wonder if there is another workaround to allow me to actually calculate the parameters as part of the family.

and Curtain Wall Dave - have fun on vacation and let me know if Alf gives his OK to post the document - sounds really interesting!

Create the parameters in the family, calculated values as required, and do the data collection in the project.

You have horizontal types A thru G. Type A uses shear block type 12. There is a SB at each end so there are 2 per horizontal. Each shear block requires 2 fastener type 89 and 3 type 122. So if you get 24 horizontal type A you have 48 shear blocks type 12 and 48 fastener type 89 and 72 type fastener 122. Easy right? How do you discern which horizontals out of the 7 types are type A?

    Hey Dave,
Any update on the document? I've been learning dynamo and am really interested in what you talked about.
    thanks!
