2012 Kills the Elevation Mass Transparency Workaround?

Some of us used to use planes of masses with a transparent glass material to add depth to elevations.

When I upgrade projects to 2012, these masses are no longer transparent.

Any idea why, or how to fix this?

The only fix I have so far is to set the Mass category to 'Ghost Surfaces' in the view, but I no longer have granular control over the amount of transparency.

You can play around with 3D views set as backgrounds, but that is annoying.

Not much of a work around, but I remember reading that if you create the mass in an earlier version of revit and then import it, the properties of the mass come with it into 2012.

This happens after a project upgrade...so, there is a Mass family (not in-place) in a 2011 project, and when upgraded to 2012, the same Mass family no longer retains its transparency in elevation views?

For this trick to work, you´re using 3D views as elevations right?

Did a quick test in 2011 and upgraded it to 2012, and don´t really see any difference in the transparency... what am I missing?

No, this used to work with a normal elevation.

The masses had a special 'glass' material applied that would progressively 'fade' things in the background.

It still works in 3D, but it is much easier and better to keep it all in one elevation. So, no ideas? I think something has been changed in the graphic styles, and I think it may have something to do with Ghost Surfaces etc.

Hmmm... Sure about that? Glass only shows as transparent in 3D views, while it´s opaque in elevation views.

It definitely works in 2011. Have a look at the attached images.

What can I say... tested it before, and could get nothing but opaque. But just now noticed that your mass is an in-place. My first test used a conceptual mass loaded into the test project, and that DO NOT work... Did a new test just now with a in-place mass in 2011, and it worked just like you said!

Now, I took the new working test created in RAC2011 and opened it in RAC2012... And guess what? It still works... Go figure

    Craziness

Ok, here is what I have discovered...it is very difficult to get this workaround working in 2012. However, if you have a working project in 2011 and you upgrade it to 2012, then the effect remains.

However, as soon as you 'Purge' the 2012 version - boom, the effect disappears before your very eyes!

To prove this, open the 2011 A file - it works fine. Purge it, still works.

Now open the 2012 A file - it works. Purge it - its broken!

Note - I was able to retrospectively get the effect in 2012 by following this process:
    1. Open a 2011 file that has the effect.
    2. Rename any relevant masses or materials in the 2012 file so that you can cleanly 'paste' the 2011 mass.
    3. Copy the mass from the 2011 file and paste it into the 2012 file.
    4. This 'might' work for you...
