    Materials libraries

Hi there, I'm trying to render a family I currently have created. I am looking to use a chrome material for it but there is only one available chrome material available that I can find in the Autodesk library but it's not quite suitable for what I need. Are there any libraries that I am able to download online as add ons or whatever out there would anyone know? and if the only option is to create a custom material then how would I go about creating a custom chrome material as I'm pretty new to this. Many thanks.

    Ben

Google image search is a good place to start for additional images. You can also try TurboSquid, Textures.com (formerly CGTextures), DeviantArt (careful, potential for nsfw stuff) or a number of other texture sites.

You should have several chrome materials available? Polished. Pol.Black and Satin. Dig a little deeper and you will find nearly a dozen more...

Sometimes people say chrome only to mean a mirror finish or that shiny stainless steel look. Revit does have both, a mirror material and a highly reflective stainless steel.

    Thanks for the reply guys,

@rbcameron1 - I have attached a screenshot, please see the left hand side of the screen. When I type in Chrome there's only one listed material there. I wasn't sure if I needed to select this material and then change the colour, transparency etc. Am I just typing it in wrong? Do I search another word other than chrome? Yeah that's what I am after, a mirror finish look but I can't seem to get that at least not with the chrome material that's available to me.

There are "Revit Materials" and then there are "Render Assets." What rbcameron1 is talking about it Render Assets, which- unless youve done something aggressive during your software install- are certainly there, but you havent found that dialogue yet- are most certainly there. The "Revit Materials" might not be there, depending on what template you used. But you can just right click on an existing one and hit Duplicate. Then, move the tab on the right side of the material editor to Appearance instead of Graphics, and youll find the whole other world to experiment with.

    Sorry for the late reply.

Thanks for your reply Twiceroadsfool. I will try those. I was trying to achieve the effect in the pic shown below. If anyone has any suggestions on the best method to achieve this finish or effect then please let me know. I have a chrome finish on the picture of the model here but it keeps turning black and I don't know why. Thanks very much.

The chrome effect won't actually look like chrome unless you render the image. What you are seeing is the shaded appearance which is what you'll see in a shaded or consistent color view. You can adjust the appearance to be a lighter grey if you need to.

In addition, chrome is a highly reflective material, and what you are seeing in the picture you posted are the reflections of the environment around the object. There doesn't appear to be any surrounding environment in your Revit model. I have a "cheater" material I use for situations where I don't want to use actual reflections:
