guys, unless they changed it with sp1, Revit ALWAYS exports FBX in feet (at least according to the ADESK tutorial for working Revit to Max). Mind you, could have changed. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HvsV...BA4skzrpuLAp4G

On a hunch I found what seems to be a workaround for the problem of some faces of objects in a linked Revit2016 model into 3dsMax2016 finishing black in renderings but look fine in shaded views.

If I select the object in question and add a UVW modifier, that seems to fix the rendered output.

On a general point, it may just be the way I create custom materials in Revit but I find that all my materials which come in with the linked Revit2016 model into 3dsMax2016 have 'Reflection Glossy Samples' set to 32 making them very reflective.

I also find that the bump maps are set far too high as well.

In fact I now spend a lot of time redoing materials in 3dsMax rather than using them as they come in from Revit.

Nope, doesn't work all the time - and varies in the way it works, or does not, unpredictably so I am probably not understanding the problem.

    Very odd.

    William,

Are you using FBX or a direct link Revit file? I have not had any issues with FBX, Max 16 and Vray (since the latest service pack).
I see that it says you are using a direct link now. Sorry. Anyway, you might try FBX. One more step possibly, but I have had luck
    with it.

Thanks, I've been wondering whether I should go back to fbx.

I will try linking via fbx on a problem Revit-linked project and see if that fixes the problem.

    cheers,

I've just noticed that reloading a modified linked FBX file out of Revit 2016 r2 into 3dsMax2016 SP1 doesn't work - nothing is updated in 3dsMax 2016 SP1.

The linking worked really well in 2015 versions but now is a source of endless frustration.

Nah, ignore that - updating does work (if you remember to re-export the fbx file from Revit that is

However, faces again disappear - or the texture on them at least.

It's a right mess to be honest and costs me many hours extra work.

You're right Ski, thanks - fbx works consistently as long as you don't rename the exported file saved out of Revit when updated.

So that's what... over 6 months to find a reliable workflow for linking Revit into 3dsMax that was previously excellent and better in v2015?

I am guessing that this isn't a much-used workflow of Revit and 3dsMax because Autodesk have not exactly made it a priority to fix.

    Fingers crossed for v2017.

After the latest update (SP3) to 3dsMax2016 I thought I'd see if linking a Revit file now worked OK - and yes, it does seem to work now without losing faces - so far - but I also wondered about the Workflow method of transferring/linking Revit 2016 models into 3dsMax 2016.

Would anyone know if there is some particular benefit in using the Workflow method, apart from allowing some transfer parameters to be stored?

Workflow of Revit 2016 to 3dsMax 2016 seems to work fine but I notice slight differences in the way materials are brought in if a Revit object (like a multi-layer roof for example) comes in to 3dsMax via Workflow or a Revit file link - the former seems to split the materials whereas the latter just adopts the top material, as far as I can work out.

That's with both methods set to bring in combined by Revit material (Suite Workflow method defaults to by Revit Family Type which I noticed was mentioned in a Revit to 3dsMax webinar recently but so far I don't see why that is better).
