yep, its me. Same ole Ski, just hanging around. I had a few fatal blue screens with the FBX in 2015, and tech confirmed the error, but said is was fixed in 2016. Well, apparently if you fix one thing it messes up about 215 others.

    Excellent

Glad you mentioned having this issue as well as I'm puzzled so few users seem to have reported it, in forums at least.

I did raise the issue with Autodesk support and they offered to look at my files etc. but I was leaving the country and never got round to it - also it seemed a product issue that needed a fix.

looked for known issues in max 2016 and this quirk is not listed. I have a support case activated, but there has not been a peep about it.

A comparison of Revit with Max, linked via RVT into MAX, Object by Revit Material. Colors in Revit help show the planes. Note the Roof, the ceilings, all structural members are missing (not turned off - missing) and there are issues with "normals" on the cabinets.

I don't seem able to get even that much linking Revit2016 into 3dsMax2016.

Here is a brand new project, just created in Revit 2016, with the project linked into 3dsMax2016, and then another screenshot from 3dsM2016 with the Revit2016 project exported as FBX and linked into 3dsMax2106.

I've tried combining materials and leaving them uncombined and it makes no difference... just a complete mess - and updating the FBX export link doesn't work - the whole file completely disappears then.

I thought I had solved it today. I reduced the size of the fbx /Revit file by saving out a group. I was able to work back and forth between the two as in days of yore, but after exiting and reopening it is acting up again (losing materials). I did determine that you must set (save) your default renderer in the scene or it will wipe out your materials ( I use VRAY and the initial default is Nvidia). Once I got past that, it worked fine until I saved/opened and worked a new render, then tried to go back and open the original. I just shut down max and revit and will restart and see what happens.

    The successful renders.

update - restarting max and revit didn't help. Upon update of FBX (reload) the FBX did the disappearing act, and when reloaded again - all material assignments were missing, although it looks like the FBX is properly loaded.

Just had notification of a reply to a thread in the Area forums which is interesting as it quotes a response: (scroll down to bottom, quoted text is in blue)...

Thanks. I posted a response on that forum since you were kind enough to provide the thread link.

Apparently my last post did not get up. Got a call from Tech support. This is in the hands of the development team, who has it working supposively and it is in quality testing, hopefully to be released with a service pack.
