how do you get light fixtures to glow?

Yes there is probably a very easy answer to this but I cant find anything regarding making the light fixture, for example a recessed can light, to "glow" in a rendering. sorry for the dumb question but if anyone could help that would be greatly appreciated. I am currently only using the light fixtures that come with revit in my renderings. thanks. thomas

You will want to make sure that the light fixture uses a self-illuminating material on the inside of the housing.

For reference, you can check out the Delray light fixtures we have over at ARCAT. Snag (transfer project standards) or look at the material used for the Reflector Finish parameter on the downlights and change it to suit your needs. You'll want to adjust the filter color of the self-illumination to match the color output of the lamp (light bulb) you are using.

thanks so much Andrew. Sounds easy enough. So basically your saying light fixtures out of the box must be modified In order to "glow".

Or you can, if using an area light, turn on Emit from Shape (or whatever it says). Pretty sure you need to be at least at a Medium quality setting to see the effect.

Right. The downlights that come with Revit don't have the ability to glow without making modifications. You can use the paint tool to paint the inside of the housing the illuminating color, leaving the rest of the extrusion to function as the "trim" color.

I have a couple of posts on how to achieve this over on my site:
    Search results for "material illumination"

Let me know if you have any questions and best of luck!
