    America has castles?!?

Never been stateside, but Cali is definitely first on my to-go destinations once there; with the Redwoods, Salk Institute & Sea Ranch top of the to-do. The Geisel Library as well, if I could get that south.

    Oh and obviously vineyards.

That sounds like an architectural pilgrimage rather than a family holiday. If we had no kids then maybe (my wife is a Landscape Architect) but I'm looking to get away from the (often) career from hell that I've chosen and not think about work or anything related to it for even 5 secs after the plane takes off.

She would enjoy a visit to the Getty Center. There is a very nice landscaping design there.

Thanks Alfredo, I'll give it a look.

My son and I did this trip about 6 yrs ago and FBLome's post was pretty much our outline. The one thing we did not on the list was the 17 mile drive outside of Monterey. If you like a scenic drive looking at homes you can never afford this is for you.

My son was ~14 at the time and he liked the Monterey Aquarium, redwood forest stops (those are north of SF though), and Disneyland. He also enjoyed the drive along the coast on Hwy 1 but it is a long drive. We also did Legoland which he was excited fro, but it ended up being more for kids just a bit younger so he did not enjoy it as much as he thought he would.

P.S. we DID stop to see Dave Jones, and he treated my son and I to lunch at the country club so it is too bad you will miss that stop. :-)

If you go further North of Monterey to Santa Cruz...The Mystery Spot is a fun place to just stop by to see. Santa Cruz is also a fun place to go to, especially if you are a fan of The Lost Boys.

Okay, you want redwoods? Ignoring any time constraints, motion sickness issues, cell phone connectivity requirements, do this side trip. Lunch at Alice's Restaurant. You'll miss some of the boring coast and still end up in Santa Cruz. Rent a Mustang convertible (except top up it sucks). Ignore the tech giants down by the Bay where I am.

Fred, sounds like a plan. Can't stretch to a Mustang though (although my car-mad sons would love it) as I've already upgraded the hire-car to a "luxury" gas-guzzling 4x4 of whatever flavour they have free at the time. The drive sounds great and not too long at all. This is going in the itinerary...........I might also stop off at Facebook and throw some eggs at the place for all the damage it's done to the world.
