Here is a more relevant example of what the Apple Pencil can do on the iPad Pro.

Some of the apps - like Autodesk Sketchbook Pro - hesitate when the pen draws thus making them useless for the present.

A note taking app called Notability is excellent though - it feels like real ink is pouring out of the pencil and keeps up with your writing or sketching.

Best so far has been the 'Paper' app by developer '53'.

I spent 5 minutes messing about on this and the pencil and brush options are particularly good - being light and fine or press harder and it becomes darker - tilt the pencil so that the side of the 'lead' is rubbing on the tablet surface produces a similar effect to the side of a real pencil lead.
Rubbing with a finger causes the 'paint' to smudge slightly - and the watercolour 'dries' if left for a couple of seconds, so that another application darkens the intersection of the new and old 'paint'.

I'm no use at sketching but just to show the fine lines and range of tones you can easily obtain I've attached my scribbles below:

Cool! Are these features and apps available to an Ipad mini 3?

Yes - and the '53' pencil works very well also with the Paper app, but cannot achieve such thin lines as the Apple Pencil.

    Indeed

You can trace with the Apple Pencil as well, by the way - I saw that on one of the Apple fan sites which I thought was a neat tip.

Turn up the brightness to shine through the paper and trace over whatever works.

I think I've found what may be the best sketch and paint app for the iPad Pro - called Procreate - with the Apple Pencil this really is very good - I scribbled this below in about 20 minutes without reading the manual (which of course is the right way to learn an application )

Layers and filters similar to Photoshop but quick and intuitive access to tools.

Incredible value for money compared to desktop apps as with many iPad apps.

Work by proper artists on show at its main website here:
