and one more thing

ok, i'm trying to use this corbu chair, i have downloaded the enclosed file, it seems not to have parameters that allows me to change the covering or the color/material of the frame. is there a short explanation that someone can direct me to.
yeah i know i ended with a preposition....

Select a piece. In the properties, you'll see the material parameter. It should say Pelle nera as the current material. You see little oval thing just to the right of it? Click on that. That should open a family parameter dialogue box. You should only see <none>. Hit the "add a parameter" button. Create a parameter name, like Cushions or something. Select whether you want a type or instance parameter. Hit okay a few times.

Now, go to each piece of the couch and repeat. If you want all of it to use the same material, you don't need to create a new one. Obviously, you'll need another parameter for the metal legs.

Now, when you are in the project, select the furniture and you should see your new parameters (either in the properties if they are instance based, or in the type properties if they are type based). You should be able to assign a new material now.

and one more thing

OK, Dan, thank you for your prompt response, i have worked alot on studying your answer.. here is what i have so far.
file 10589 works perfectly has all necessary parameters when loaded in project..

file 9476 is the one i gave you first, and i can make it work sort of, i think i did what you told me to. i opened the file i got online and i think i added parameters as you said. After placeing a (one seat) incidence into the project from the project browser i highlighted the whole chair (the pieces cannot be individually highlighted). i could then edit the cushion and frame but only one cushion changes.(see enclosure) maybe since the chair won't break into pieces in the project i have to change each piece individually before bringing it into the project. i am also confused about the difference between looking in properties and type properties, i only a single place as far as i know called properties.

Just for the record i am enclosing a file 6132 it has no parameters i can see, is it possible to work with this somehow, not that need to, because i already have 10589. just curious...

Thank you very, very much for your help so far....

Did you put the 10589 one together? That's done correctly. You can even add a parameter to the chrome parts to change those in the project.

The 9476 one sounds like you only did it for 1 "cushion". You'll need to do it for every extrusion, sweep, whatever individually. Every one of them needs to have the parameter set up.

The 6132 is just an imported DWG. I wouldn't use it for anything. I'd get rid of it. Native Revit geometry is always best.

What I meant by properties and type was this:
If you make any parameter an instance parameter, it will show up in your properties dialogue box. When you change an instance parameter, it will only change the selected instance of the family. In other words, if you have 10 of these chairs, and select one to change the material, only the selected one will change. The other 9 will stay untouched.

At the top of the properties dialogue box, you'll see a button to the right called Edit Type. When you use a type parameter, you select a chair and hit the Edit Type button. That's where the TYPE parameter's are. In the above example, you select a chair and change a type parameter, it will change all 10 chairs. You are editing the TYPE of chair, not just an instance of the chair.

This hold true for any parameter in any family. There's 2 kinds, instance and type.
