    Family Browser 2012 Installation Question

    Hi All.

We are very near to releasing our Family Browser app for Revit 2012. I have a quick question for some of the existing users.

Are you expecting the FB 2012 version to use your exsiting setup txt files (ie group and tab configurations) or are you going to create new ones specifically for Revit 2012.

Comments and suggestion are greatly apreciated.

    Cheers

For us, they need to be separate, entirely.

      1. We keep different libraries for each version, and they're nowhere near the same thing.

      2. If the same setup pulls the same content in both versions, what happens when someone upgrades a family to 2012 and then needs it in 2011?

      3. New features/new content. I might have adaptive component tab, now that they can get placed in the project. In 2011 they can't...

I don't mind if it's a separate install, or an option, or if each FB version installs somewhere different... But rac2011 doesn't equal rac2012.

We will generally upgrade everyone immediately, but we still have legacy jobs that contractually cannot upgrade.

Although we have yet to purchase ours, I would like to second the above; we're very much a multi-version office/library and it would be good to keep them seperate - and as above - wouldn't mind if it meant a seperate install.

As pointed out, we would need to keep separate FB setups for each version of Revit. We're often on a couple versions of Revit for a couple months (at least).

However, I'd certainly want to at least have the option of copying the previous version's setup to the new version so I don't have set it up from scratch. That would be a major PITA.

            Hi iru69

Thanks for your comments, but I'm a little confused. If we were to have an option to copy over the 2011 setup then basically that would then be pointing to the same paths as the 2011 version. Is that what you want? Should we have that as an option but have a warning as well to mention that?

            Cheers

I think the intent/want is to have a way of duplicating your existing text files to new ones that are "converted" to read to new paths... a migration of sorts. At least that's how I'd like them to work... perhaps even offer a way to control a "master" set that you could "make" different versions of?

I think thats a very dark black hole. Since the FB sort of freaks out and gives you thirty pop ups when it cant find the office library, im not too keen on it taking a half court shot at what might be the office network directory structure, from year to year. It takes 4 minutes to copy some text files and do a Find and Replace. If its NOT as simple as a Find and Replace, then i dont think the FB should deal with it at all, since the text files need to be rewritten.

Its just imperative that different versions of revit have different libraries.
