    Sheet grid for detail sheets

    I'm trying to set up detail sheets and want to have a layout guide grid that will help align details in an orderly fashion as well as dictate the naming of the details on the sheet. But I don't want this grid to print. And the grid is 6 1/4" wide by 5 1/8" tall in order to get a 6 column by 5 row detail layout on a 30x42 sheet.

    So using the grid guide doesn't seem to work since it only allows square grids.

    Should I create a "grid" titleblock overlay that can be turned off before printing? (I don't want it to print because there may be views that take up 2 or more spaces and cross over the grid guide)

    Any suggestions?

    I am very interested in this topic. I too have a need to have my details align in the sheets. My current system is clumsy, tedious and just doesn't work well.

      Here's what I'm testing right now:
      In the titleblock fmaily I have created a new object style subcategory called GRID. I have drawn a 6 column x 5 row grid in that subcategory. This now shows up on all the sheets with this titleblock. Once I'm done with layout, I can VG that subcategory off prior to printing. It works - as long as people bother to turn off the GRID subcategory. Otherwise, there will be a lovely hidden line halftone lines running through large details.

        I would just control it with an instance parameter rather than a subcategory...you can select all instances and make sure the instance check box is unchecked before you print.

          If you make your grid lines with really light colored lines, they will not really print at all, or not be noticeable. We do that on our detail sheets.

            We have them built in to the titleblock, and its a Type Property. So we leave them on until the drawings are ready to print, then we grab one titleblock, go to the type properties, and uncheck the "alignment lines" button.

            Instance properties works too (select all instances > entire project > uncheck), but you run the risk of someone having editability of that one titleblock, or someone forgetting, etc.

            Guide Grids = useless.

              We somewhat combine them. We have Instance parameters for different configurations, like a 6X5 grid for most things, but a 3X5 grid for elevations, for example. These can be toggled on on a sheet by sheet bases. Then we have a Final Plot type parameter, that toggles all the grids off & replaces the Not For Construction watermark with the appropriate stamp, across the entire set.
              After plotting turning off Final Plot brings the grids back, but only on those sheets that specifically had them on.
              We also use a very thin pale blue line that mimics non-photo blue for the old timers, and prints light enough that it doesn't visually get in the way.
              Our view titles then have thicker cross-hairs to facilitate alignment with the grid, also in non-photo blue.

                This is exactly what we do as well. Same for the 'Not For Construction' text.

                  Thanks! I'm going to try adding the Type Property to the titleblock family. It seems like the most straight-forward and user friendly way for an office full of new Revit users.

                  Apologies for the numerous typos in previous posts. We have no heat today. I'm typing with icicle fingers.

                    I added ref. lines in the title block to make the grid or use invisible lines, then when you highlight your titleblock you see them but they don't print.
