    Objects not staying selected

I know this is a long shot, since not a lot of people seem to be encountering this, but I thought I’d see if anyone had heard of this. (I'm also not certain if this is a Revit Structure-specific or a General Revit question, so I hope it's okay to post here).

Basically, objects I select/highlight in the active view are deselected by Revit Structure 2011 whenever I attempt to change to another view, if the Project Browser happens to be undocked.

Note that this only occurs on my new Windows 7 computer running the 64-bit version of Revit Structure. (My Windows XP computer, which I still have available, running the 32-bit version of Revit Structure 2011 has never demonstrated this issue.)

It doesn't seem to be project or template specific. As an ultimate simplification of a reproducible, I started a new project using the default template and drew two random 10” walls. I selected one (within the default Plan – Level 2 view) and then clicked on the (only) 3D view and sure enough neither wall was still highlighted/selected.

I found a forum thread over at RevitCity.com where a guy was/is having the same issue, so I know I'm not the only person in the known universe having this particular weirdness. (whew!)

Fortunately, he had discovered that the problem only occurs when he’s got his Project Browser undocked outside of the Revit window (as I normally do – over on my second monitor). I historically have had the Project Browser by itself on my second monitor to help maximize the working area, and had I not seen this post, it wouldn't have dawned on me to try re-docking it.

So I tried dragging the Project Browser back over the primary monitor into the limits of the Revit application and docked it on the left side, and sure enough any element(s) I selected remained selected after selecting a different view.

(Note that having the Properties window undocked and/or on the second monitor doesn’t seem to matter.)

So, at the moment, selected objects seem to remain selected between views as long as the Project Browser remains docked. But I really gotten used to having the Browser out of the way on the second monitor on my old WinXP machine. So it’s not a show-stopper at this time, just inconvenient since I normally would have two monitors allowing me a larger working area.

Also, I should note that my version is Revit Structure 20100326_1700(x64), so I believe that this is the original release version and not the latest patch. But I haven't pursued this yet since (a) I have no indications the updates even remotely address this, (b) some users have apparently reported encountering much more critical issues after having updated, and (c) logistically I can't patch without a sometimes lengthly approval/validation process through my I.S.)

    Thanks for any ideas,

    Ardias

Well, this seems like a bug to me... I would file a support request with autodesk to let them know. Don't think there's anything else you can do...

I have the same problem, even with the browser docked. My work flow is usually to open both views i expect to be using, select the object and use the Switch Windows across the top tool bar to switch views. While not ideal, it does work consistently.

If you lose the objects you've selected you can always use Ctrl + Left Arrow to get back what was previously selected. While this doesn't solve your problem of losing it when you switch views, it's an easy way to get it back.

Ahh, thanks! That's certainly simple enough and is a small price to pay to regain much of my screen area. Thanks for the tip!
