    overhead sectional family revit 2011

ok, so i opened the "overhead sectional" family from the imperial lib. I loaded into the project.
I clk'd. edit fam. I made changes and have a or more or less acceptable design for 3 garage drs. for the project, but one of the doors I want to be a different design.

I can't seem to find a way to leave two as is and change the third. I think i'm all f- - d up because I dont think I know the proper way to save families, load them and otherwise follw correct form for using families. all this inspite of owning and going thru three different video tutorials.

Every time I delete the door I want to change and go back to imp. lib. and try to rename or open a fresh overhead sectional that does not seem to work. the 3 seemingly cannot be separated, or the one changsd as I desire.... any ideas??

I am not sure I follow, although make sure you are clicking the button "Load into Project" after saving your changes. As for the different types, use the Types button within the Family Editor. You can set visibility parameters to control what lines are shown for each design. These Visibility Parameters can then be set within the element instance props either in your right click menu once the lines are selected or the top left corner drop down under element properties.

Am I on the right track?
Also try to save the family to a different location than the imp lib location.
Rename it to your naming convention and make your changes so when it is loaded into your project it will be a unique instance.

Tom once you've editted the OOTB family to your liking, save it as a new file in your own library, then load it into your project. Then go back to the family, save it again under a new name, then make the changes for the second style of door, save the changes (to the file), then load that in to your project. You will then have 2No. families, of differing "design" to use within the project, to chop/change as you wish (once you've placed them of course)

Genre's on the money with suggesting visibility settings to have both "designs" in the same family, but if the differences are considerable, and you don't feel comfortable with visibility/geometry parameters just yet, then go with the basic method to start.

Failing that, you know where you can send your sketches.

one thing i am willing to add that over visibilty setting. If you have something that above view range and you want to load it into project and it can not been seen. The reason for this that revit can not read overhead items that is not belong to this 3 categories:1-casework 2-windows 3-Generic model.
So if you have like canopy that its range above cut plane and you want to show it under especail equipment category or any other category as overhead item then you need to draw invisible line within view range in the elevation in this category in the family editor then load it into project so it will show what above cut plane as hidden line , this is just trick from paul aubin as source.

Thank you Gen, I can't believe I am just getting back to this. Already I am stuck, I erased the doors I had drawn, and now I can,t seem to pick anything from the Imp. Lib. as before So I guess I am not getting better but even regressing.
Any idea why not. I open the revit project, have 1st fl plan Ck insert,Ck load fam, ck Doors, find overhead sectional,
ck open, nothing happens unable to place it. I have tried other fam too. must be some stupid thing going on.

have you tried to look in your project browser and delete the family from your family menu list? then once you reload it, there should be a new fresh instance. revit is like a rollercoaster, peaks and valleys. it is awesome, then you hit a wall. then it is awesome again.

Although if you can not get anything from the imp lib to load something else seems to be wrong.
                  hmmm anyone else encounter this?

Tom can you post the project? and doors? I can test it and see if it works on my machine.
