What Revit Wants: Goodbye Autodesk Resellers?

Google Reader has this interesting habit of capturing blog posts even after the author has deleted them. One long-time Revit blogger recently made a few interesting observations about Autodesk and resellers - and I will here provide a few selected excerpts from that captured-before-it-was-deleted post:

    "
Expect big changes this year from the reseller channel. Profit margins have been shifted and it will be harder for smaller resellers to compete, be profitable, pay for quality techs and outlast the recession. There will be a thinning of the channel as Autodesk shifts more sales to online resellers so you can saves extra 7% by skipping your sales tax payment when buying online. Also, there will be fewer Gold resellers as the requirements have been raised.

Autodesk is ... having a big meeting tomorrow internally and I'm guessing there will be a lot of personnel adjustments as the salespeople there aren't as important anymore. I guess the same benefits of the Internet and access to information have reduced the need for old fashioned salespeople.

As Autodesk moves more products into the cloud, you certainly don't need a reseller or technical support.

Interesting stuff. Do you still use a reseller? What do you use them for? Would you prefer to just buy your software online, and do all your own technical research through blogs, wikis and forums?
