Swearing on forum - Censor Filters

    Hi All,

    A quick heads up.

A few hours ago we switched on the censor filter which replaces the obvious words with "*******".

None of us had any great problems personally with the level and type of swearing which happened from time to time on some threads, however, yesterday we were advised that individual firms had set up their own internet filters to word search which totally block access to sites which contain swear words.

Thus, to ensure that all members have continuous access whether at home or at work we have switched it on.

    Cheers,

So if anyone named the Shortstop over in the Silly Forum Games thread we would have been doomed?! No worries with the filter. Just REALLY glad I don't work at one of those horribly uptight firms.

And thanks for the heads up Ian.

Winnie the *** is swearing? Oh dear um, what shall I say. I don't want to offend the ether. Now, being of a designery bent, I propose we ADD a few words to the list as well. Strip Mall? DEFINITELY a swear word.

Its not even really that the Firms are uptight. Some Websense Filters find *certain words* and instantly declare that the webpage is Illicit material. Thats what happened to me all day, based JUST on the thread where we were DISCUSSING profanity on the admin board.

A lot of the modern Filters do it.

The firm itself is pretty laid back. I emailed IT and told them what the site was, and they unrestricted it. But im not all about getting flagged for looking at "those types of sites" even if its easy to undo the block.

Its generally good form to err on the conservative side, in my humble opinion. The other admins are free to advocate turning it off, it will just mean i cant be here. LOL.

Yeah Aaron, my place is the same way. Uptight (appearing) by Default I guess, in that we want/need some sort of filter, and the default filter makes sure NO ONE is offended, and we haven't bothered to try to tune the thing. Before we had filters people would sometimes accidently find their way to whole websites about strip malls. It actually made one of our PMs cry, and he is a pretty tough guy.

In all seriousness, yeah, good to have some basic stuff in place. When someone "needs" to make a point, I (I mean they!) can get creative.
