I have a thickened slab but when I join the slab and the thickened slab it leaves a couple of the lines. (see image). How can I get rid of those extra line?

Make sure they are the same material.
If that doesn't work, there's always the line tool set to invisible line.Dan -
Ah-Ha! moment - the thickend slab was "Concrete" the floor slab was "Concrete - Cast-In-Place Concrete".
