Just clarifying, you are looking to make the column snap to grids when you hover over them with a column, yes?

Any OOTB structural column will automatically snap with their centers to the grids... Are you trying to snap to something else but the center of the column?

no not the center i mean what about edge of column on grid i know this is not used in construction but just try to see effect of strong refrence plane.

OK then, open the column family, and instead of using a "Strong Reference", change the ref. plane at the sides you want to Snap to be "Center Front/Back (Or Left/Right)"

With columns, it's the "Center" Ref. Plane, and not the "Defines Origin" that defines the snapping point.

Is there no other way to achieve this than revising the family?

Not OOTB afaik. But it shouldn't be that hard to change the the references in the family? Unless you have a badly structured family ofcourse
