Sure. Select the beam and in the properties box the Beam Material box will take you to the materials and you can change it to any color you want.

when i select it it doesnt give me any material option. this is a structural steel beam so maybr that might have something to do with it???

Nope. I change mine all the time. Usually safety red. But anyways, look at the attached screen shot. The three dots on the right side aren't showing in the screen shot, but just hit them to open the material editor.

If its a custom beam and changing the structural beam color in VG doesn't work it could be that a material was not applied or you may have to create a filter to change its color based on the family name or category.
