    Road profile family

    Hi,

Since I'm not very advanced in family creation, I need your help.
I'm having some road profiles. There are points at different hight on the road and a line that pass through them. Also for each existing point, there is a "designed" point. These designed points are also connected with a red line.
    My questions are:

    1) Is there a way to read a line length (or a dimension) and to place it in a text? (something similar to fields in ACAD)
    2) Is there a way such that a text (label) can be attached to reference plane and move with it?

I atached a dwg and a picture. I tried with the parametric options in ACAD, but they look very bulky. They are present in the uploaded dwg.

      Just 2D. It's a section through a road.

You should create a line based generic model Family. Create a Shared Parameter (instance, length) and apply from side to side. Draw a model line in the family and lock it to the Reference Line and both ends. When placing the family in a project this SP will read the length. Be aware: this only works on the straight linetype. So you can't use arches, splines, etc.
After this, create a label that uses the SP. You can apply this to all line segments giving the length per segment. You'll need a schedule to calculate the total length. See the attachment for an example.

          Hope this helps...
