    sharing the model

What's the best way to share my model with our structural engineer?

We've been sending it back and forth with all the bells and whistles attached, but now that the model's getting larger it seems crazy to send them the entire model, complete with details and annotations.

Is there a way to just send the 3D model without all the other crap?

Not really. there is an etransmit tool now to make it easier. However I don't know that they get a big performance hit because all of the views are there.

Something to think about, you could detach from central, delete all the sheets in the project and all views, that aren't levels, and that should make it smaller. The only thing that Structural is looking for is the actual model. They should be able to get everything else from pdf's or communication.

manually, you can clean up model a bit before sending out, like purge, audit, remove sheets, etc.

automatically, API will be the solution, i wrote one (Strip Off Model) a year ago for my previous employer which will let you to choose which to remove, like views/sheets/links/etc., i even tried to remove customized parameters in family w/ limited success.

An easy way is to select all elements, make a group then link it to a new file.
As a result, the file will have nothing in it except geometry.
If the model is huge, split it in 2 or 3.

            nice workaround!
what about linking to blank project and bind? well, you still have to split it if the model is too big.

The question you have to ask yourself: is all this really worth your time and effort?

Perhaps look at setting up Revit server? This way they can potentially use the same model.

I would say DONT start cleaning it up. Its not worth it. You will start eating time every time you change something and need to resend. we resend our models every friday. It would be awful to have to clean them up and most likely a waste of time. I don' t know of any data that shows a model without views in it, loads faster when linked than a model with views in it.

Not only is it not worth it, its not a good idea. Just send them exactly what you work in.
