is there a way to control the *visible* end of a Ref Plane? Would a scope box work like they do on datums? Or is there a way to move the visible end of several Ref Planes at one time?

Nope, there's no way to control them. They don't respond to Scope Box or Crop Region. They don't have a 2D/3D switch to change the appearance per view, they won't auto-lock ends like Grids do...
Basically, they don't do squad.Martijn de Riet

Yeah, would be nice... one step further: have it change color when something is actually hosted on it... But being able to color code it would already be a treat!Martijn de Riet
