For what I do (curtain wall detailing) 99% of what I've seen available online is garbage and so I create my own content. That said I don't need as much varied content as an Architect would and maybe what's available for them might have better quality. I see a lot of AutoCAD geometry converted to Revit and it doesn't work well for what I'm trying to do.

Dave. What is the problem with them? I am trying to get more members to my site. I am tryign to top Revitcity. I am saying this because I am on the fence on offering free or pay content.

I usually create my own content or go to sites like ARCAT or CADdetails - usually the quality of families are a bit better and generally come from the manufacturer or represent a real world object. I haven't been to RevitCity in a while and I find that most of the stuff there is junk - inaccurate, doesn't work, parameters are broekn etc. A lot of files where the creator didn't properly flex the family...

again, I'm a specialty Revit user so I don't ever speak for the normal group here which comprises probably 90% of this forum membership. What I've found available from the manufacturers that I deal with (Kawneer, Efco, Oldcastle, etc) is that their content is not created totally in Revit for Revit. I don't want any Acad garbage in my Revit families. Doors don't flex correctly for size, type, or swing. Same with windows. And what curtain wall content is available is a joke. I've only been at this (with Revit) for a bit over a year now and I'm already seeing an improvement in the quality of what's available but I'd still rather learn how to create my own content that IS the way I want it. That said I think that there is a niche for a high quality family content source that would cater to Architects, Engineers, HVAC guys, etc. And, if that content was good usable stuff you could charge a reasonable price for it. Sort of seems to me like going into the restaurant business. You can create a place with great atmosphere, good food, and reasonable prices and get a clientele going but what a tough way to make a living!

I don't use Revitcity or Autodesk Seek, for the reasons stated above. Usually it doesn't work (entirely) and you end up using more time to fix someone elses mindwarps then when you create it yourself. I occasionally use manufacterer's stuff but only for interiors and lighting (Visa Lighting is awesome)
Anything else I create myself or buy (I like to be able to yell at someone if it doesn't work).

And I create for third parties (to get yelled at if it doesn't work, which luckily isn't very often)

I guess I'm a bad revit user. I steal whatever I can from wherever I can to get the project done!

I think so too, don't worry! Everyone who started here began with shuffeling everything they could find in their own library. At some point you'll reach the conclusion that the benefits don't weigh out the problems you get. It's a pain to keep your template straight with all this "foreign" content so you'll start to create your own. All in due time...
