    Facebased Family

    I have seen Paul Aubins, work around for getting a wall based family to facebased or un-hosted.

    but is there anyway of getting a face based family to become un-hosted?

    There is a trick.
    In the family select the Host extrusion.
    In the properties you'll see the Extrusion Start and End. Set both of those to 0
    Revit will complain about Constraints not satisfied, choose Remove Constraints.
    Then Revit will complain about Extrusion is to thin, choose Delete Element(s)
    In the properties now uncheck the newly visible Work Plane-Based
    You now have an unhosted family

    BUT, you can not set the offset of the family in your project. So it is unhosted, but has limitations.

    Not having the offset can be interesting for some families, where you want the hight above level to be part of the parameters in the family.

    When I found this out I wanted to change my fire emergency families to one of those, but it would be again a lot of time

        I edited my post right after you reacted, so not sure you have seen that. So my BUT:

        BUT, you can not set the offset of the family in your project. So it is unhosted, but has limitations.

          Just tried it out. With a electrical fixture it just gets hosted to a level. I unticked work plane based.

          Reason I want to do it is we doing a big apartment block with 100s of rooms but only a couple of different types. I wanted to create model groups of these types. So not having to change everything in each room if there is a change and i believe hosted elements don’t work well in model groups

            As long as you host the families to a wall that is also in the model group it should be OK, but I still don't use hosted families because you would need 2 of them, one hosted and one un-hosted and that not right

            But electrical fixtures are either wall based of un-hosted and the trick I posted above does not work with wall based families because there is no way to remove the wall from a wall based family as far as I know.

              We use face based for most of our electrical fixtures. And the wall would be there but in the linked arch model so think it causes problems as the wall is not in the group.

                Yes it would.
                So if for some reason you are not able to remove the extrusion from the family to turn it into an unhosted family you would have to recreate them I think. Are yiy able to post ibw of your electrical fixtures so we can have a look for maybe a solution?
