Revit add in to automate data extraction from models

    Hey everyone!

I've participated in the development of this Revit add-in that helps to extract data and provide information in an easy way.

Would like to get some thoughts and feedback, and hope you find it useful!

I would like to hear others' take on this also. Boss asked me to check it out.

Just ran it on our template and (in excel) quickly found 2 small naming errors in our fill patterns.

-the process families button made me think revit had locked up while it was running and I killed it twice before I tried waiting, and it finished after about 5 minutes - with about 20 of the families reporting they could not be opened.
-what is the Upload button for? It was greyed out the whole time.
-our custom project information parameters weren't recognised
-only loadable, non-system family information was exported (no Walls, Ceilings, Floors, Railings etc.)
        - would be nice if the excel formatting was a bit clearer, with every export / open in excel I had to resize all the columns on any given sheet.
        - there's no explanation for what the batch process tool is processing? It's a family file upgrader I'm guessing?

Overall I found it a simple easy to use tool with plenty of room for expansion, like re-importing changes made in excel!

Thank you so much for your feedback and for taking the time to review this add-in! It is very helpful! Below, I comment a bit on the errors you found!

          - Just ran it on our template and (in excel) quickly found 2 small naming errors in our fill patterns.
With this add-in you can visualize some of your fill patterns containing .dwg on their names, which indicates whether it is imported from a .dwg file

          - the process families button made me think revit had locked up while it was running and I killed it twice before I tried waiting, and it finished after about 5 minutes - with about 20 of the families reporting they could not be opened.
Regarding this, when you press the "Process Family" button you get a sign that tells you that you won't be able to keep working on your model and that you won't be able to cancel until the process is done.

Families showing a "could not be opened" message contain an error and if you try to open them you'll get some sort of error requiring a decision on the part of the user to continue. The advantage of this process is that it shows .dwg files, images, size and nesting depth on families. That's very useful info at the time to check a model's standards.

-what is the Upload button for? It was greyed out the whole time.
this button was meant for the second stage of this add-in! in the future it will allow you to upload files to an online platform meant to coordinate project check-ups with clients. This is under development at the time and that's why it is all grey.

-our custom project information parameters weren't recognized
thats not a function that this add-in performs it only reports basic project info, as it is not possible to know all the parameters created by the user beforehand. This is something that we'll consider to develop further!

-only loadable, non-system family information was exported (no Walls, Ceilings, Floors, Railings etc.)
the Sniffer only reports loadable families, it does not report any kind of system families. This process takes a little more time since it has to open families one by one and get their info. That's a reason why it can't process system families as these can't be opened as ".rfa" files to be edited.

          - would be nice if the excel formatting was a bit clearer, with every export / open in excel I had to resize all the columns on any given sheet.
this is something we'll take into consideration, it was meant to show columns on the same size in order to see all the available info more easily.

          - there's no explanation for what the batch process tool is processing? It's a family file upgrader I'm guessing?
this process is meant to process multiple revit files at the same time and to get an excel report for each one of them. There you can choose whether you want to process families or not. This has to do with the time it takes to process it and that's why the user gets to decide what to do. The "batch" concept is the same as the "batch plot" in Autocad.

          - Overall I found it a simple easy to use tool with plenty of room for expansion, like re-importing changes made in excel!
Sniffer was designed as a standard and quality checking tool in relation to the great amounts of information that we handle when working with revit.
for example, when we work with DWG files. It is
imposible to know with the revit interface if those files are linked or imported. Besides you can visualize if the same DWG files was imported from two different folders but with different names.
