    Possible to create a poly-carbonate luminaire family shaped like a cloud?

    Hi. I am trying to create a luminaire that is shaped like a cloud with a translucent polycarbonate material.
    This needs to be in one luminaire family so that I can send it to clients.

    I am having small progress creating the shape with mass template, However, I can not find a way to import this into the family!
    I'm still fairly new to Revit so there might be an easier way to build this, other than creating a bunch of arcs and creating sections of "curved strips" as I am.

    It doesn't need to include all the layers and rivets it has in real life, if is only the shape that is important.
    I have the model in a Rhino file and have imported as .sat file(I'm using v.2017) but as I am not able to make the .sat import translucent, I thought I'd build it in Rhino. If I am not able to make the Revit shape translucent either, I might as well use the .sat file.

    Anyone know if this is possible?

    As you're finding, you're going to be hard-up against Revit's wanting for better free form modelling here - and there's no two-ways about it, you're best going hacky - i.e. (imported .sat geometry) over using Revit's massing/AC tools for such a thing.

    Many might (and do) puke at the idea (of using imported foreign content) - myself included* - but as it is, unless you're inclined to blow-up (the rest of) your model, compromises must be made.



    *I'd suggest, in the context of BIM, the luminaire (family) could "just" be an approximation of the form - but/if this is for viz. well, again, a proxy (in the Revit realm) should suffice.

        This form is not difficult to do, but... unfortunately, Revit keeps this division of two "worlds" that are not compatible. The shape is not difficult to do in the adaptive family. But, the Lighting Fixture category is not available in that "world". In the generic families' world we have the Lighting Fixture category, the lighting source and all that, but the available tools in that "world" cannot model this shape properly and easily. It's a dead end. The software can do the shape but does not allow the user to do any family of any category with that shape. I don't see any tendency towards eliminating that "great wall" between these two worlds. Why can't we have just one family editor with all the tools of both worlds?

          couldn't he make the shape as a GM adaptive and then in the project environment group a light source family with it. So technically its not one light fixture, but a light fixture with an adaptive component shade around it.

              Use a generic model adaptive template for the light fixture housing, and nest a light fixture family inside of it.

                If you do that, and you insert this composite family into a project and you click on it, the ribbon won't show the buttons to create systems, and the connector of the lighting fixture will be invisible, even if the lighting fixture family is shared.

                  Thats only partially true. If they are Shared, the Systems and Connectors buttons WILL show up, if you Tab-Select the shared family. Some MEP folks dont know to look for that, but its how the majority of our MEP content is built, and it all works great.

                  Having said that: I would absolutely lose my s**t if people started making light fixtures out of Adaptive Components. You can get darn close (but not exact) with regular sweeps and extrusions, and it simply doesnt need to be that exact form, for this object. This is the slippery slope that ends up with people making couches and sofas (where is Andrew to get his backhanded comments in about it being a requirement) out of Adaptive Components, and then no one can figure out why the model is a giant bag of trash, in a few weeks.

                    Can you show a screen capture that shows the connectors in a nested shared lighting fixture family? For example, a conduit connector, and how to connect conduit to that nested shared lighting fixture family?
