Faster way to pick families to place in the model?

I have about 100 rooms worth of casework (all different) that I need to model in a huge school project, and I'm finding it super time-consuming to pick and choose each family to place as I go along. Scroll and pick the countertop, place it. Scroll and pick a cabinet, place it. Scroll and pick a different cabinet, place that. Scroll and pick an upper cabinet, place it. And on and on for what seems like forever. Clicking on Component, and then having to pull down the type selector and scroll through a huge list of families to find the right thing seems terribly inefficient. A floating tool bar with all my casework families shown would be much faster.

I suppose with 2019 I can go dual screen, have a view open that has every family type and type my keyboard shortcut for Create Similar. But we're not on 2019 just yet. Any other suggestions to speed things up?

oh yeah, I remember we tried something like that years ago and never could really get it to work right for some reason. Do those typically show the contents of a family library folder, or the families loaded in a project? I need the latter.

A lot of them do either, or both.

I feel bad about suggesting this, but what if you created a "Junkyard" View with the cabinets you want to place. :hide:
Keep that View open so you can select an element in the View, then Create Similar & switch to your Plan View to place a new instance.
I know, I know; bad practice. But if you have a small number of cabinets to select from, it'll work. Just remember to delete the dummies before issuing.
I forget if CS pays attention to Phase, but if it doesn't, you could make this View similar to a "Legend Phase" View

Yeah that's sort of what I mentioned above. I would rather have a separate window that I could pull outside of Revit onto my other screen, or docked somewhere in the Revit window so that I'm not switching between views, and new views wouldn't cover it up.

Stretch revit across both screens :hide:

You can drag and drop from the Project Browser.

I think he's after a visual of each family, something possible with those mentioned apps
