FormIt - is anyone using it?

    FormIt - is anyone using it?

    Just curious .... is anyone using FormIt for real work?

    I have had a play with it but at the moment I can't really see it replacing SketchUp, Rhino, AECOsim, etc for concept modelling or even design modeling.

    However, I could be missing a trick.

    I don't use Formit at all. Then again, i don't use Sketchup at all either. Rhino, for really "interesting" forms (Stadium Envelopes, and non uniform shapes), i am a huge fan of. Its really great software. But i wouldn't use it for typical buildings. They are easy enough to do in Revit.

      Yep. It's a bit of a squeezed market for Formit.

      We don't allow SketchUp. The models are a dead end.

      Rhino is great for concept and design however the lack of object history, parametrics, drawing production, and information property stuff is becoming a bit of a pain which is why we are more and more replacing it with AECOsim at the front end.

      I wonder where Autodesk plan on taking Formit in such a crowded and established market.

        I keep getting projects where some genius gives the project manager a (poorly done) sketchup model. Then they want a working model made from it and a few weeks later, exported back into sketchup for their 3rd party team to animate. Yeah... I'm not a popular guy with clients lately

          If someone were to ask me which they should use, SketchUp or FormIt (and for whatever reason Revit was off the table), I'd suggest using FormIt since at least it's not a complete throw away of the model. The challenge is, as bjohn pointed out, that SketchUp has first move advantage as well as the network affect going for it. Doesn't matter at some level whether FormIt is a better product or not... people are loathe to change.

            Sketchup was still somewhat viable to show intent but now that it's web based it's slower than my boys cleaning their room. If I could I'd fire clients that send me sketchup

              Respectfully, i challenge the assumption that what you get out of it isnt a throwaway model.

                That's fair. But at least it plays (should play) nicer with Revit -- then again, if you model sloppily your'e screwed regardless. That you can also get Insights and hook it up to Dynamo are also in the plus column. But yeah, end of they day you're still abandoning it and modeling in Revit so, in that sense at least, it's a throw away model.

                  There isn’t much development going on in FormIt (and Revit’s conceptual design tools) and therefore would probably never be a replacement for the many other tools for conceptual design. At least this info coming from an Autodesk rep at a local Autodesk conference.

                  While SketchUp currently is probably the most used conceptual tool in term of downloads, all firms I’ve worked for in the past 15 years used Rhino as their primary conceptual design tools regardless of the complexity of design.

                    Even better, I see firms running dual models. One in Rhino or SketchUp for design, quick and flexible modelling, quick design options, stuff for viz and a second model in Revit for documentation.

                    That is just nuts and such a waste of time, however that where the gaps have developed with such large numbers following the crowd.
