    Column Piers

    I am wondering if anyone has created a family for a column pier that allows you to change baseplate size and pier depth? I want to create a concrete pier family that allows me to change width and height, baseplate size and thickness based on the column that is associated. One of our clients loves to embed their columns and have a block-out around it (2'-0" squared). I have been stacking my brain on the right way to go about making this so that it is fully parametric and will even have a 1/2" void to represent the expansion material around the block-out.

    I thought of creating one using a generic family but in the end I would like it to look for the center of the column bottom so I dont have to move it around to the correct location.

    Any thoughts/concerns/questions/advice would be appreciated.

    I don't work with structural but what you have described should be easy to create as a GM. Parameters for width, length, height, offset from floor level, clearances, etc, all shared if you need to schedule them. Origin point of the family would snap to the center line of the column. So, what have you tried so far that hasn't worked?

      I created one with all you mentioned as a generic model but the issue was having to place it below the column. I was not able to have the insertion point be the bottom middle of the column. I had to move it around to center it.

        If you build your family centered on the Left/Right and Front/Back reference plane intersection the family will be place using that origin point. So, in the project you do a Create Instance and select the intersection of the center of the column. The only way that this wouldn't occur is if you have changed the Is Reference and/or Defines Origin parameters in the family. If you have a family started, post it here, and we'll help you get if fixed.
