New PC/Workstation for Revit 2019 and Twinmotion

    Hi All,

I've recently moved over to Revit 2019 and started using Twinmotion and my existing PC isn't up to the job so I'm looking into a new system. I'm on a budget so feel a custom build would get the best results on a limited budget.

Ideally I'd like to keep below £1,200 ($1550) including delivery and some form of warranty.

I've been reading through the forums and various component/pc build websites and am currently looking at the following spec which comes in at £1,150:

    - Corsair Carbide Series 200R case

    - Intel i7 8700K - (6 x 3.7 GHZ - Turbo 6 x 4.7 GHZ) - Coffee Lake

    - Cooler Master Seidon 120V (Advanced Liquid Cooling)

    - 16GB 2133MHz (2x8GB) - Lifetime Warranty (DDR4)

    - NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 - 6 GB - (PCI-E) - DVI/DP/HDMI - HD/4K/VR - Supports 4 Monitors

    - Corsair 550W PSU - Low Noise

    - Asus PRIME Z370-P (Intel Z370) - 4xUSB 3.1/2xUSB 2.0

    - Motherboard Integrated 10/100/1000 Ethernet Lan (Broadband Ready)

    - Wireless Network Card 300Mbps (PCI-E)

    - Motherboard Integrated HD Sound

    - 3 Year Standard Warranty (2 Year Collect & Return)

I'd welcome any thoughts on it's viability as a machine for Revit and Twinmotion or any suggestions for better alternative components.

    Any help/guidance appreciated.

    Matt

Not really familiar with Twinmotion but what I see on the website is that it is real time VR and this means a lot of strain on the graphics, unlike Revit itself. If that is indeed the case the GTX 1060 would most likely be not powerful enough and you want to go with a 1080, which is a bit more expansive.

And I don't see any storage in that list I think

Thanks for the input. Forgot to say a 480GB SSD is included as well (and I've got an external HD I can use for storage).

Twinmotion uses the unreal engine for real-time rendering so it is quite intensive on the graphics card, as you say it might be worthwhile stumping for the 1080 then.

If not for Twinmotion, that machine would be nice and something very close to what is on my list when I finally get a new workstation, minus the wireless.

I build a lot of Revit workstations and had a client using Twinmotion a few years ago. At least then it was very similar to Lumion with hardware needs. Comments below on my thoughts with the parts

          ---

          - Intel i7 8700K - (6 x 3.7 GHZ - Turbo 6 x 4.7 GHZ) - Coffee Lake Perfect Revit/Lumion/Twin Motion CPU. Keep in mind though the all core speed is 4.3ghz unless they overclock it. The 4.7ghz is only on one core and that does not happen very often that the CPU is literally only using one core. It is a marketing number honestly. Figure 4.3ghz worst case with good cooling and maybe 4.4-4.5ghz at times. Like I said though, perfect for Revit and many workstation uses.

          - Cooler Master Seidon 120V (Advanced Liquid Cooling 120mm perhaps? That is enough for an 8700k

          - 16GB 2133MHz (2x8GB) - Lifetime Warranty (DDR4) Most RAM has lifetime warranty but I highly suggest 3200mhz or at least 2666mhz or higher. 16GB is a good starting point. 32GB might be needed in the future or now but rarely do people need 64GB. If you plan to do VR work, you likely will need 32GB.

          - NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 - 6 GB - (PCI-E) - DVI/DP/HDMI - HD/4K/VR - Supports 4 Monitors This is what I would call a good video card but the lowest end to get. This can be upgraded later and will have some sort of resale value. Get it, use it and see if it meets your expectations. The 1080/1080ti will be top end. GPU RAM use is something to consider

          - Corsair 550W PSU - Low Noise - Without knowing the model it is not too helpful but it is probably one of their cheaper models. Try to upgrade to a gold rated power supply. 550watts in a quality unit is enough. If I dont know the model I would say go for 650watts-750watts to be safe the continuous rating will support the GPU loads.

          - Asus PRIME Z370-P (Intel Z370) - 4xUSB 3.1/2xUSB 2.0 - OK motherboard. Since you need wifi I would upgrade to a motherboard with Wifi to not tie up the PCIe lanes with a wireless adapter. Since you save from not needing the pcie adapter, the cost to upgrade will not be too extreme. Otherwise USB wifi adapters from trusted brands like Asus actually work VERY VERY GOOD.

          - Motherboard Integrated 10/100/1000 Ethernet Lan (Broadband Ready) Standard/normal on all motherboards.

          - Wireless Network Card 300Mbps (PCI-E) See notes in motherboard section

          - Motherboard Integrated HD Sound Normal/Standard. These work very well now a days. Not like the 90s/early 2000s where you needed a sound card to get anything good

          - 3 Year Standard Warranty (2 Year Collect & Return) Sounds like a good warranty. See if you can find reviews to determine if they offer good support.

If you decide on a different motherboard...make sure the RAM slots are NOT on both sides of the processor. Mine barely fits with my CPU cooler block.

Dual 1080ti is the gaming standard for VR. There are also i9 CPUs out now. They're completely overpowered for anything except high end youtube gaming content creators producing 4K videos, people who stream on Twitch at 1080 60fps, kids with daddy's credit card playing modded Minecraft at 300+fps or running VR simulations at a decent resolution and FPS.

Thanks everyone. I took the comments on board and have now ordered it with the 1070 GTX card and upgraded the RAM to 3200GHz.

I'm looking at upgrading to something like this soon.

Do you have the system up and running yet? If so, how is it performing?

                    Hi Chris,

Yes, it's all up and running and working brilliantly. I opted for the 8GB GTX 1080 in the end and Revit and Twinmotion are running quicker than I've ever had on past machines, even on the ultra settings in Twinmotion. My only obvious error (I think!) was ordering an SD card reader when the case already had an integrated one but otherwise all seems fine. I bought it from Computer Planet who delivered on the promised date (10 days from ordering) and were easy to communicate with.

I'd be happy to run a benchmark test if there was one you'd like me to try.
