Perpetual License or Subscription....time to give in?

Just wondering how many people are still holding on to their Perpetual Licenses and why or gave in to the subscription model?

My office still has 10 seats of the BDS Premium. Nice thing they are not network managed, I just make sure I only install on 10 workstations. Our maintenance plan is up for renewal next month.

We have 4, currently: 2 BDSU, and 2 AECC. Any new ones we get will be the AECC, but there are no plans to switch the BDSU ones to AECC.

There's an interesting thought that's been floating around the office recently - if ride our perpetual licenses until the end and then just keep them, it would allow us to have a version of ACAD (and other infrequently-used software) that does not require constant upgrading and redeployment.

From my understanding Autodesk is incrementally jacking up the prices of perpetual licences each year until they essentially become too pricey to maintain.
In addition changing over licence types is a PITA.
They give you a new interim licence called an M2S (maintenance to subscription) licence.
This allows you to use all your legacy softwares for a year without having to change anything.
The main problem you will have here is if you then try to install and run any NEW software in your new "AEC collection" package, none of it works on the M2S licence and you will have no idea why (except for me now telling you this is what happens)

If you do go with the upgrade, realise that the M2S licence is only a temp-fix you need to get IT to upgrade the network licence files to use the NEW "AEC collection" licences ASAP or none of the new programs in your packages will work through the network

Oh and lastly, you used to be able to download the entire BDS as one file then install what you wanted out of it.
Now with the new AEC method, you have to install each program seperately (imagine doing this for a large business) Im not sure what the hell Autodesk were thinking but its a bit of a nightmare.

So if we decide to cancel maintenance...I have to reinstall everything with the non-subscription updates else the software doesn't work anymore. (Think I read that right)

If we decide to move to Subscription and get the AEC Suite, I have to uninstall and reinstall everything with new info...and setup users on the subscription management page...

Else we keep paying for jacked up maintenance plans and everyone keeps working and we still get updates.

BTW, If I had to do the first two I would be getting Pragmatic Rollouts... Should have it already, may purchase it myself.

            It's renewal season for me.
My math (+/-) so far is:

            Year Maintenance Subscription
            2018 €1,280.00 €1,230.00
            2019 €1,480.00 €1,230.00
            2020 €1,860.00 €1,230.00
            2021 €???????? €3,636.05

Now I am really trying to make up my mind on this.

The price on the subscription if you switch from perpetual to subscription is 16% after the two years. So it would be €1427'ish.

So tis that time of the year and our maintenance went up 20%. :banghead:

The offer for AEC is now the same price that we paid for maintenance last year and this is the last year they are offering the discount. Our reseller says maintenance will probably go up again next year as well.

A year later, and ive re-thought, and changed my mind, on the comment i made above. When we are due again, ill probably convert all of ours to AECC, and get rod of the BDSU's. Then ill just have to get screwed and buy one extra license, for Inventor.

It isnt the price, for me. But the constant maintaining of two entirely different sets of deployments, JUST because of BDSU and AECC, eats up more money in the year than the cost of one extra license to keep Inventor around.

And then i can get rid of FlexLM entirely.

If you convert from BDSU to AECC directly without different pricing schemes you should be able to consolidate to one serial number / license. We converted our BDSU when there was a deal on the pricing, and it has a different serial number than the AECC. It sucks to keep up with...
