Updating multiple linked files at once - shared parameters?

We have multiple health exam rooms set up as individual files that are linked in to the main model. The workflow has been to first insert our generic exam station family into each unit and then update them as the design evolves. Some of this is graphical (dimensions, faucet heights) and some is not (room name, colors). The difficulty is when we make these changes, each of the linked files need to be opened and revised. If you miss one or make a typo, the schedule will not populate. The other method is to change the family and reload it into each of the linked files. When you have 15-20 linked files, both of these methods are very tedious.

Is there a way to change these parameter values all at once without having to work in all the files? Can shared parameters solve this or is there another approach?

Set up your hospital rooms as Groups. instead of Links, and not have to worry about it.

I know right! The powers that be were skeptical of groups and forced this linked file approach. Now the peons get to deal with it.

New plan: Go tell the powers that be that they were wrong, then change the plan. LOL

EDIT: In all seriousness, if you are stuck stuck stuck with that workflow, and nohopes of changing it: CTC does have a tool called the Batch Loader. You can specify if you want it to Overwrite the Family or Overwrite the Family And Parameters, and batch load them in to multiple projects. Itll do what you are after.

But even WITH the tool, that workflow is going to suck.

I made the suggestion to someone to use linked files for preconfigured structural components at one point on a project, but I didn't know they had 20+ different components. Their machines ran very slow as all the links and the primary model was maxing out their ram.

So unless everyone working on that projects is maxed out on RAM on their workstations, you are going to hate life.

Don't get me going on the whole linked file vs group aspect. All the issues we warned them about have happened. Every schedule is one click away from self-destruction due to this over complication of links. Slow??? On screen right now is a project with 13 different links and each of them has one to 10 copies each in the main model. It's painful.

But they are right, the file size is smaller. :banghead:

So no quick workaround for updating multiple links at once?

I like big files and I cannot lie
You other BIM masters can't deny
That when a model loads in as a super fast pace
And the file size in your face
You get sprung, want to pull up tough
Cause you notice that brower ain't stuffed
Deep in the RAM it's using
                I'm hooked and I can't stop abusing
Oh yeah I want to get modeling
                And to do some rendering
My collegues tried to warn me
But with that file size you got makes (me so drafting)
                Ooh, load that new material
You say you want to see the aerial?
                Well, use it, model it
'Cause you ain't that average user
                I've seen it rendering'
To heck with ray trace seeing'
                It's sweet, yeah
Got it goin' like a turbo 'Vette
                I'm tired of magazines
Sayin' AutoCAD is still the thing
Take the average drafter and ask him that
                Revit's gotta crash attack

                Revit's got *FATAL ERROR*

That was a reason given for links over groups. All the groups in the main model would be too big of a file. Sooo technically that's true. Realistically though, the 70 or so linked files make that a moot point. But honestly, I've never compared this current method to one of 70 groups in a model.
