Problem with IFC export (Doors centered)

    Hello everyone,

i've hit recently a Problem with exporting a IFC from Revit. I'm using a selfmade Door Family and when I do export my Project (.rvt) to IFC the door gets centered to the middle of the model and not to the middle of the door opening (which it should). Please check the Screenshot. I tried to adjust the door to make the problem more clear. So basically the IFC is moving the door to a spot it shouldn't be.

Is there a way to tell the IFC export (settings) to export the door at the point where it is placed?

    I hope someone can help.
    Thanks!

    Sincerly your

So I tested some things out. One of it, opening the IFC in different IFC Viewers. And the weird thing is, that the door seems to be at the right spot only in Viewers. I wonder how it can be, that Revit displays the own extracted IFC wrongly. Thats really weird to me and I'm really clueless, still hoping for some help.

Here you go. Took me about 3-4 hours to create this door family. I think that's pretty slow for such a uncomplex family, but I'm still at the beginning of creating families. I'm curious if you find some mistakes in my family.

Another thing about IFC. So I asked at some other places, and most people say that you never should load a IFC to Revit (which I did). They say there is always some unpredictable things going on when you load (or should I say import?) a IFC in Revit, and not just link it.

So I think there is no real good solution to share a Revit Project, which should be still editable but doesnt give much information about the Families and Materials and other "Knowhow".

I see only 2 Options: link the IFC or give the .RVT?

EDIT: It seems to me that if you open a IFC in Revit, Revit is like extracting the IFC and builds everything new. And there is the point when the errors happen to the model. Correct me please if I'm wrong.

          Give the rvt

Well, I deleted the .rvt already. It's nothing more than just loading the family into a random .rvt, place it on a random wall, and you will get the the same effect.

So I've opened your door family and I saw nothing wrong on it, I've created a new project with only your door at the center of my model (a simple room actually), the door is at the center of the model in SOLIBRI ifc viewer.

I recommend you no to open the IFC but to link it into your model, is more easy to manage that way.

Finally as already say I've found nothing bad with your door I wonder about your export to IFC settings, Regards

Ok, so yea I don't open any IFC and work with them. (The idea was actually to figure out if a client could change something and work with the IFC, or if we have to give him the RVT to make him able to do future changes to the project)

My IFC export settings are all default "IFC2x3 Coordination View 2.0" except I added 2 checkmarks at "Additional Content" - "Export only elements visible in view" and "Export rooms in 3D views". Someone told me to check these.

                Thanks so far!

revitnoob, the issue is probably not in the exporter but in the import routine. Revit has, last I checked, two different import routines. One is 'open ifc', the other is 'link ifc'. Linking an ifc still converts an ifc into an rvt in the , and saves that rvt next to your ifc file. These routines can have different results.
First, did you use the custom ifc add-in (found on sourceforge or the revit exchange store)?
Second thing you can try is use still other exporters/importers, geometrygym has a forked version I believe, and there are others, most if those tailored to convert ifcs from other software authors into and from revit. One example I know of that provides a revit add-in is Tekla.
There must be a better way...

Yes they can have different results (open and linking ifc). But I guess linking ifc comes with less (or none) problems than opening ifc. Or at least it seems to me like that.

I used the ifc add-in from sourceforge. Are those other exporters/importers you mentioned 'better' or in any drastic way different? Any experiance with those so far? I thought sourceforge is the way to go.
