    Need text that align/locks to ref planes to show in elevations

    I'm building a "super cabinet" family that is made fairly exact to how cabinets are actually built. I have my adjustable shelf as a 3D extrusion inside the cabinet, and in the front elevation I have dashed symbolic lines aligned/locked to the shelf model geometry. The model geometry and symbolic lines are all tied to a Yes/No parameter to control whether or not the cabinet has a shelf inside. Works great in a project.

    However I also need the text "ADJ." just above those dashed symbolic lines that will show up in a casework elevation view. I need to be able to align/lock the text to ref planes so that it will adjust based on the shelf's position, and I also need the text to turn on/off following my Yes/No parameter for the shelf.

    Is any of this possible with anything other than model text? I really, really want to avoid model text if at all possible.

    put the text inside a detail group along with a couple of invisible lines for alignment - you can align/lock the group

        What Greg says above is pretty much the only way to get it to work, unless you nest a label and align its ref planes.

          The problem is that you want it in elevation. More discussion:

          You may have (limited) success using symbolic lines to draw your letters. They will not match other fonts. These are lines, not text, so will not scale with the view, and they do follow the mirroring, rotation, etc of the host family. If you choose to go this route, know that the old .shx fonts (in ACAD) are line-based and can be exploded within ACAD (TXTEXP).

            hmmm it seems that grouping detail lines creates a MODEL group, while text exists in a DETAIL group. So doing that creates two separate groups.

            Also I can't control the visibility of the group with a parameter. I need it to be controlled by the Yes/No parameter that controls the shelf inside the cabinet, and its associated hidden lines in elevation.

              Text in elevation, in a family? Text in a family isn't visible when loaded in a project...it has to be a nested Label annotation family.

                But is there a way to make that work in the elevation view? If I can't make it work then I have to put a piece of dumb text on every cabinet section in all casework elevations for the adjustable shelf, which I really would rather avoid.

                  Sorry, I was focused on Text in a family not being visible in a Project.

                  I think the advice to create the text with Lines is probably simplest. I'd be inclined to create a generic model face based family that you can place the model (or Symbolic) lines on and then host on the face of the shelf(ves), and/or offset from. Use Detail Level to avoid having the label appear in the majority of views.

                  Controlling the visibility of the ADJ is the biggest justification of using tags...add them where required and you never worry about them anywhere else.

                    Yes you can!
                    A fellow workmate of mine showed me this little trick
                    although you can't assign a Visibility Parameter to the group itself, you can edit the group, then assign the visibility parameter to the elements inside the group
