Error: No element in a secondary Option can be referenced by an element outside that

Summary: I want to be able to duplicate a wall type (or any element, for that matter) within an option without having to go outside the option.

Description: I work in options quite a bit and constantly receive the following error:

"No element in a secondary Option can be referenced by an element outside that Option."

All I was trying to do was duplicate a wall type and modify it to generate a new wall type...a wall that I want in my option. Why should I leave the option in order to create a wall I want in the option?

This makes working in options needlessly cumbersome and interrupts workflow. In fact, I really can't see why Revit would force a user to exits options just to duplicate a wall type. Any workarounds?

Maybe just Duplicate it from the Project Broswer, then it will be in the Project, and you can create the new wall type in the D.O.?

A bit less convenient, but not much.

That's the issue I am having, while within the option, I select an object, go to the project browser, and duplicate, the issue is, I can't do this within an option; I have to switch out of the option, and go to the main model, which is the issue I am trying to avoid. It's cumbersome and disrupting workflow

This has been a problem for awhile - you can modify types, but not duplicate them within a design option. It is very annoying.

So - it seems that sometimes you get the error when you attempt to make the duplicate family, and other times you do not... but if you DO successfully make the duplicate family type, you may find you get the error message if you try switching between design options. (switching which is shown in a view, switching which one you are editing, etc).

I found this post on the the BIMChapters blog:
Today's post comes compliments of  industry expert   Pieter Schiettecatte from A+I in New York City . There is a bug in Revit 2019 tha...

The solution is to create new versions of the "offending" families while in the main model, and then swap out/delete the duplicate family type that was causing the problems....

My question, now, is - can anyone think of a way to find/search for these "offending families"? Are they families that would only exist within a design option? If so, can dynamo isolate such a search query? Or, could these offending families be made outside of the design option in which they were originally placed, making it virtually impossible to track down what families are causing the problems?

Interesting - I've never tried duplicating anything in the primary option I guess. I didn't get an error, even copying the item between options. You'd have to find something unique about them to filter for them, and I don't see anything unique about them.

I work in the primary so rarely that I doubt I'd run into it much. It would be good if the error message would just let you acknowledge the duplicate will be in the main model and move on!
