    Cannot Publish Shared Coordinates

I have a site file with a building file linked into it. Revit will not allow me to publish coordinates from the building file to the site file. Both files are workshared, Revit 2018.
I can set up the shared site in the site model, but when I try to SWC, I get an error message that says "Link Cannot be Saved: You cannot save the link BUILDING.rvt because it has changes in more than just shared coordinates, which can invalidate local files owned by you." The message actually pops up twice during SWC, I assume each time it is trying to save the local site file.
I have done some research on this issue. There are no other links in either file (DWG or rvt), and the linked building has also been SWC before starting this process.
The trouble seems to be something in the building file because if I create a new test building model, I can link it into the site and publish coordinates just fine. I have also created a new site file for testing and the building model behaves the same way, so it's not the site model. Does anyone have any clues about what might be causing this and how to fix it?

I've run into this with a couple clients recently. The work-around is quirky.
    • Building Model: Make sure you have a Local File for it (I save to my own PC)
    • Site Model: Change the saved path to the Building's Central File to your own Local File instead
    • Site Model: Publish Coordinates
    • Site Model: SwC (should succeed and get a prompt to Save changes to the linked file)
    • Site Model: Close
    • Building Model: Open your existing Local File SwC (passes shared coordinate data to central)
    • Building Model: Close
    • Site Model: Reset the path for the Building to the central location

Any future Publish Coordinates, if necessary, should work after that.

Some years ago this error message was tied to linked files (DWG) that were actively changing. Revit would notice those links were different than the version it had a record of during a SwC, even though it does not reload links during a SwC. I imagine it takes note of the file date or something high level that defines the DWG in the database. The solution then was to reload those links before using SwC.

In this case, it isn't about DWG files. Revit is being picky about something subtle in the linked file and it isn't clear to me yet what that is. We did try reloading links before publishing coordinates too. Only the steps above got around the error.

Thank you, Steve. That worked. I do not really want to think about how you figured that out...

        Uh...wow. Yep, this fixed it.

What was odd though, when I tried to open my local it was grayed out. I had to detach from central to open it.

Just experienced this on 2 separate building files, both started months ago, that I was trying to link into a site file just started last week. Both building files were started in 2017 and upgraded. Site file started in 2018.3. I sure hope it's not something in our template and we end up having this problem on all the other building files we're about to create on this project (20+ more separate building files)!

I'm running into another issue where my linked civil site (dwg) keeps jumping every time I open the project or reload the link. That is in 2017.2. Testing it now to see if I grab a copy of the same central file and open it in 2018.

Reload the link with the original view it was linked into while using Project North. If it is set to True North when you reload it will rotate out of alignment.

Well that is annoying....but yeah...it's not jumping.

                  Hello all,

I have the same problem but only my Building.rvt is a Central Model.

I created a SITE.rvt in which I linked a .dwg file (survey map) and I acquired coordinates. After I linked a Central Model file and Publish Coordinates from the Site to the Central Model. When I go to save the SITE.rvt I get the following message (see attachment) , and I am not able to publish the coordinates to the central model.

What I need to do in order to Publish the coordinates to the Central Model?

                  Thank you in advance!

Try reloading latest for the building model before trying to save the location.
