Prevent a DWG to be visible in a Revit file, if it can't be found.

    Prevent a DWG to be visible in a Revit file, if it can't be found.

    You know when you..
    • 'link' a DWG
    • delete the DWG it referenced
    • then open the Revit file again and it still shows the DWG in the view.


    Is there a way to prevent Revit from showing the 'cached' version of the DWG? In other words, is there a way to prevent the DWG to show in the view, if the link to the DWG file is broken?

    I don't usually have CAD linked into my projects but my current project I inherited from another detailer and I discovered that even though I didn't have the CAD files that were linked into the project, in Manage Links they report "Not Found", they are still visible in the project on sheets. I guess Revit keeps a cached copy somehow. If you want to temporarily not see them I don't think that is possible. If you want to remove them permanently I would think that using Remove in the Manage Links dialog would nuke them but I haven't tried that...
    I'm retired, if you don't like it, go around!

      Does the "remove" button in the Managed Links dialogue box not work?

        Yes, and I personally think that's a very good thing. I can't tell you how many times I've had to repath XREFs over the years. So much wasted time.

          I think it is not 'real referencing' what xref DWG names it in Revit. It should be read more like 'importing with a leech' ..
          Loose the link as leech, what then?

            Revit converts CAD files to "Symbols". Each time Revit opens it attempts to refresh the symbol.

            Options:
            Remove it from Manage Links.
            Turn the visibility off in the view's Import Categories
            Put it on a workset that isn't visible by default.
            Select it and delete it.

                It sounds like the DWG was Imported, not Linked. That's true if it is present in a view but not listed in Manage Links (ML), only Linked Files appear there. If a linked file is copied to another view it remains part of ML until the last instance of the link is deleted (or Removed in ML).

                As mentioned earlier, Revit captures the data of a Linked DWG file and stores it within the Revit project. When that file can't be found Revit reports "Unresolved CAD links or DWF markups will display as they were when the project was last saved"...as part of the Unresolved References dialog.
