Joining 2 walls together overrides the column...

You're making us work rather hard to help you out. What exactly is the problem? After trimming the walls the column is inside the walls? This is default behaviour for architectural columns to join with walls. If you don't want this use structural columns.There are no stupid questions, only stupid people
