    Material Asset Names

    Are there rules published somewhere on Material Asset Names? In my experience the asset names can't have symbols in them (quotes " or slashes /) but I have some material assets that have accumulated over time that are named with those symbols. If I duplicate / create a new asset I can't manually type in a name with symbols, i.e. 5/8" GWB so I'm perplexed on how the other materials got those names...

    In the long run I want to be able to process everything in excel, and being able to just push asset names from the material name is a lot easier than having to do a lot of find & replace.

    Not sure - but like the {} of a default 3D view, Revit takes some liberty what is, and "isn't" an illegal character.

    For me it's all the full stops in the actual mat and bump files that bother me.

    I'm overdue to properly centralise our materials - whilst our .adkslib is, the assets all still mostly refer to the local C: installs, which I want rid of in our next pass of workstation rebuilds.

          Gotcha. BulkRenameUtility can clean those up for you. It's one of my favorite programs!

            I've downloaded BRU a couple of times but could never get past the super cluttered confusing UI. I now use Advance Renamer. $30 for a commercial license and it's really simple to figure out. I'm not that smart ya know ;-p

              I love BRU. The UI is hilarious, but its for a good reason. Its a little bummer that since v3 (i think?) commercial licenses arent free anymore (or have they never been? Maybe i just missed the message since it wasnt on the UI earlier?), but it easily pays for itself.

              But, id think carefully about renaming those images, unless youre going to open EVERY asset and repath them all.

                I think I remember seeing an How To somewhere showing that one can create an Asset from a Material? Thus able to re-path your textures/tiles then swapping/moving them into the Asset database. Was looking into Dynamo nodes to automate this process for in the case of wanting materials textures renamed for standardization of & or improvement of nomenclature.

                  I also use BRU for renaming all the components in our Revit Library. It does the job pretty well and it's not really that confusing...
                  Haven't tried yet on materials, as we have not agreed on anything yet about the subject.
