    Help!

I am new to Revit world. I am to buy a computer, preferably less than $2000, that will run Revit and CAD. Can someone please just give me a computer to purchase? I see all of these various configurations... I'd rather someone just say, "HERE, BUY THIS!" ...

I have a computer I could sell you for $2K. Trust me, you would not want to buy it!

Welcome to the forum misscassers!

I'm in the UK, so can't advise on $ costs and retailers - but even the US-centric lot are going to want/need a bit more info. Trust me, unless 2K is small fry to you, you're going to want every dollar well spent.

Q1. What kind of projects are you wanting/going to be working on? Size? Scale? Stage? Etc
Q2. Do you have a monitor?
Q3. Does it matter what the case looks like?

    ...Oh & BTW:
I've deleted your duplicate thread, (keeping this one as it had the emoticon)

      Thank you!

A1. Revit. Basic not too big, not tiny.
      A2. I will have 2 basic monitors.
      A3. No. I don't care at all.

Ultimately I want the best for my buck... we are currently working with Lenovo Desktops... I don't want to go overboard, but I want a decent computer. We are a very small firm, with basic needs.

Side note: it seems that laptops are just as good as desktops for this? How is that possible?

Yes laptops are just as good as desktops but not for $2.000 :coffee:

Not really. There are always compromises. Yes, you can trick out a laptop that can beat a workstation, easy - but never at cost=cost.

            Would you prefer a laptop?

I would prefer the best for $2000. Having said that I'll be spending roughly $500-$700 for a laptop.. so I guess if I get a laptop the budget would be roughly $2700.... but only a laptop.

I just tried to config a decent Dell Precision 7720 Workstation (laptop) and it was around $2500. Which really isn't that bad. That was with an i7-7700HQ, 2.8ghz, Windows 10, Quadro M1200 w/4gb, 17.3" HD screen, 16 gb ram and a 512gb SSD drive.

Thats crazy talk, to me. (just the thought of carrying a 17 inch laptop, again. I travelled with one all around the world a few years ago. Couldnt do it again.)

First, there is no reason i would carry a 17 inch laptop when a 15 is more than enough for BIM work, and feels WAY more portable.

Second, if you go to Dells website right now, they still list the new 15 inch mobile workstation (7520) and last years (7510). The 7510 is what i have, since i bought mine 18 months ago.

If you want to get out on a budget, im on their website right now, and:

                  Dell Precision M7510
i7-6820HQ (2.7ghz)- not the newest processor, sure. But still runs like a CHAMP.
                  Nvidia Quadro M2000M
                  15.6" @ 1920x1080
                  32GB RAM
512 GB M.2 PCIe NVMe HD

For whatever reason, they are running some promotions (probably to get rid of the older line), and this machine comes out to $1850.00 on their website right now. <shrug>

Its not the newest, latest, and greatest, but its FAIRLY close to the machine i work on every day, just down spec'd a little. For 1800 bucks. Im not sure why right now the price reflects a 1440 dollar savings, but i clicked all the way through to checkout, so its NOT making you sign up for a credit card or anything to get that price.

Yeah, I prefer 17's...as usually its either on my desk at work or at home and it is a 2nd or 3rd monitor.

If I traveled like you Aaron I would get a smaller laptop too, as I have hefted around that 17" to a few places.
