    Revit Spaces in MEP

    Can anyone in the world of Revit MEP users please offer some assistance.

    I am currently working on a MEP 2015 project with multiple links, one of these links is an architectural model with room spaces & room tags. My aim is to replicate the room tags from the architects model into my MEP services model obviously without having to re-create a hundred or so rooms/zones to enable detailed locations of services within our schedules for FM servicing, commissioning etc.

    I have created an independent view & template for space/room tagging, switched all VG requirements on to view these on, adjusted my view range and have tried to place spaces automatically (after making link room bounding), but nothing happens??? If I then select Highlight Boundaries on the Spaces pull down menu bar I get the following message "a serious error has occurred. the current action has been cancelled".

    Has anyone had previous experience of this and if so were you able to fix the issue??

    I haven't had this specific issue, but I have had problems with placing Spaces when the Architect is using a raised floor. In those situations, my Level was at the "actual" floor, and my Space was therefore treating the raised floor as it's upper boundary. The solution was to either move my Level up to the raised floor level or create a new Level, and then create a Space View that used that new Level as it's Associated Level.

    Spaces are tricky but there is a real value to using them. I use them to represent my HVAC zoning, using Space Separator lines to carve up the large spaces into perimeter and interior zones, and then I do a gbXML export to my load calc software. It saves me a TON of time on larger projects.

      "Move my level up to the 'actual' floor" Or you can just select the level and change the Calculation Height and the space origin and boundaries will be created at a different height. I usually set all my levels to 500mm above the floor as standard, solves a lot of problems with raised floors, columns/doors that dont exactly touch the floor and other stuff.

      I also avoid using 'Create spaces automatically' because it often creates spaces in small gaps between walls, inside columns, in outside courtyards etc..
      Instead you can use a simple dynamo script to copy only the rooms that already exist in the architects model.

      If you only want to show room names/number and not use the spaces in your own model, there is an even simpler solution. Do Tag All - Rooms with Objects in Linked Files selected..

          What software do you send it to? we use IRS and have never managed to get a decent export from Revit

            I've successfully exported to Trane Trace 700 and Carrier HAP.

              Thank you all for help, i eventually found out the architect hadn't bound any rooms!!! Problem solved :-)

              I now have a further question..... i have created all my spaces (some 173 per floor) in my MEP model but when i unload the link to upload for instance, all my spaces have gone and i get the error Message "Space is not in a properly enclosed region". Is there a way to maintain the spaces I've created from a linked model in my MEP once the link is removed??

              Any help would gratefully be received :-)

                The architectural link is what's providing the boundaries that define your MEP Spaces. It has to remain loaded in your MEP Model or else all of your spaces will be "not properly enclosed."

                  Thanks Necro99, this is what i thought :-(
                  The issue i have is i have created a load of schedules which include spaces as room locations etc. now when i upload to an information portal to the external team all spaces will be gone and the schedules will have no spaces/rooms. Is there any way to retain the spaces?? could i copy them over from the architectural model??
